Show A FKIGIITI'l L STORY. CniiiillmlN Oestroy Three Stup. mid l-'Ui tueir Crews. Chicago, 20. The Tribune's Boston special says: A year ago last February Feb-ruary the b.irk Jewess, of Boston, sailed from New South Wales in the direction of the Auckland islands, a group which lies in the South Pacific ocean, near Xew Zealand. A few days later tlie Boston bark, Maria 11. Ltinij, and an English vessel, name unknown, followed on the same course. No tidings of the Boston vessels was received till yesterday, when Captain Bremain, of Bidde-ford, Bidde-ford, Me., of the bark Marathon, of New York, returning from a voyage around the world, brought back a terrible story regarding them. At one of the portd at which he stopped he had Tallen in wilh ft aailnr.or some one who knew him, purporting to be the sole survivor of tho three crewrs. Their vessels ho said bed become becalmed be-calmed in the vicinity of the Auckland Auck-land islands, and laid there together for several days. They were boarded at night by cannibals, who came in largo numbers, overpowered the crew, plundered the ships and scuttled them. Tne men wero carried prisoners pris-oners to the shore and furnished lood for the horriblo feast ol their captors. No particulars of the fight, or of the survivors' escape were obtained, but the facts are pretty well authenticated and the long absence of tho vessels furnishes good grouni for believing that Lbe story may lw true.- |
