Show Fire. Last evening about half-past five o'clock a fire broke out in the cigar store of Mr. Ed. Harris, opposite the Herald office, by the bursting of a lamp filled withl)anforth.fluid, in the hands of Mr. VV. T. Harris, father to the proprietor ; but whether by the flame catching the fluid while filling, or after being lighted, we were unable un-able to learn, owing to the melancholy melan-choly fact that Mr. Harris, sen., who was the only person in the store at the time, was found after the fire was extinguished, to be i severely burned as to be unable to converse. Promptly assistance was rendered; the alarm bells were rung ; the firemen rushed to the rescue ; but before the flames had got under much headway Mr. C. C. Asmussencoollystepped in, with a fire-extinguisher strapped to his back, and playing upon them soon mastered the fire. Mr. B. Johnson,!of the 16th ward, was exceedingly active in his endeavors to make himself useful, and the large number that quickly assembled labored with well directed rapidity to prevent the spread of the flames. Tile loss is estimated at about five hundred dollars, but this is a small matter compared to the injuries injur-ies received by Mr. W. T. Harris, which we hope he will soon get over. The proprietor was on his way home to his residence when the alarm was given, but speedily returned. He has been an efficient help in extinguishing extinguish-ing fires himself, and expresses his feelings in a card to be foqncl in t-hese columnB. |
