Show JOHN MITCHEL. In 1S4S John Mitchel was the Irish "patriot" and, while the son of a Presbyterian clergyman, he was editor of the United Irishmen and the bitterest bitter-est foe that PresbyteriiiuLstn had in Ireland. He was tried for sedition, and was so consistent in his absurdity i that he refused to accept the arm of an officer, while on his way to prison, because that gentleman wore the British uniform. John Mitchel finally final-ly found his way to America, and this champion ot a people, championed what? Slavery! He was the only Irishman with a reputation who de-fendtd de-fendtd the slavery of the south; and he was arrayed against his former compatriot, Tiicnas Francis Meagher, Meagh-er, who stood by the "Stars and Stripes," and fought for the freedom of the black man which Mitchel would have denied them. Poor Meagher was drowned in Montana; Mitchel still lives to air his empty nothings before St. Louisiana and Chicagoans, be the recipient of public pub-lic addresses; and tell the world his opiniona of matters which he never comprehended. |
