Show The Protestant Episcopal General Conveuliuu. New York, 10. Papers for the erection of a new diocese in Wisconsin Wiscon-sin were referred to the committee on new dioceses. Rev. Meyer Lewin of Maryland introduced in-troduced with a long preamble the foilowiotj resolution : Jtiesolved, Tue House of Bishops concurring, that the following canon on ritual uniformity be enacted. Sec. 1. Elevation of elements in the holy communion in such manner as to expose them to the view of the people as objects toward which adora-ration adora-ration is to be made in or after the prayer of consecration or in the act of administering or in carrying them to or from the communicants, bowings, bow-ings, crossings, genu flax ions, prostrations, prostra-tions, reverences, bowing down upon or kissing the Lord's table, and kneeling, kneel-ing, except as allowed, provided for, or directed by the rubric or canon, and any gesture, posture, or act implying im-plying such adoration, and any ceremony cere-mony not prescribed as part of the order for the administration of the Lord'B supper or holy communion, likewise the use at any administration administra-tion of the holy communion of any hymns, prayers, collects, epistles or gospels other than those appointed in the authorized formula of the church, are hereby forbidden. Sec. 2. In all matters per tai nine to i the public worship of the church, to 1 the ornament, arraagement and appointments ap-pointments of the holy table and in everything connected with the ritual in the performance of dtviue service, including vestments to be used about which there i? no specific direction in the Book of Common Prayer or offices offi-ces and ordinal thereto appended,- or in any legislation, general ordiocesan, of this church the admonition or judgment of the bishop of any diocese, dio-cese, given in writing, shall be regarded re-garded as binding, to be followed and obeyed by every minister of that diocese. The resolution was referred to the Committee on Canons. Several other resolutions were presented looking to legislation for the prohibition prohibi-tion ot ritualistic forms and practices, including a long memorial from the diocese of Virginia. These were referred re-ferred to the same committee. Rev. Messrs. Benedict and Rudder and Messrs. Copper and Bennet were appointed a special committee on the publication of hymnal to inquire whether the instruction of the last General Convention in regard to the publication were carried out. The chairman read a note from the Lord Bishop of Lichfield conveying convey-ing a message by cable from the Church Congress at Brighton, England, En-gland, inviting the American bishops and clergy to attend the next English Church Congress in 1S77. The chairman was instructed to send a proper reply. A motion that the Committee ou Canons enquire into the expedioncy of so amending the Canons as to pro-1 pro-1 vide that the testimonial of bishops elect be sent to the several bishops and diocesan conventions was referred refer-red to the Committee on Canons. A resolution instructing the committee com-mittee on the standard prayer book to insert in ail future editions of the book the colon or musical clause in psalter and canticles as appointed by the Church of England was eferred to the committee on prayer book. Rev. Dr. Gidney, of Minnesota, submitted a resolution directing the committee on amendments to the constitution to report upon the expediency expe-diency of appointing ajoint commission commis-sion to devise a provincial system for this church; adopted. Rev. Dr. Knickerbocker, of Minnesota, Minne-sota, pubinitted a form of a new canon, which was referred on his mo-lion mo-lion to the committee on canons. It provides that the senior bishop of the church on becoming the presiding bishop oral any time thereafter, may resign the jurisdiction of his diocese by iasuing a notice to that effect to all the bishop and standing committee of the church. In the event of hist doing bo, the treasurer of the general convention shall annually assess and collect from each diocese a sum equal to one dollar for every clergyman canonically connected therewith, and pay over the Bame in quarterly installments to the presiding bishop as his salary. - The diocese over which the presiding biahop haa! had diocesan jurisdiction shall provide a residence for him during the rest of his life, and shall be relieved of all other payment on his salary except the annual assessment. A board of trustees shall he appointed at each session of the General Convention to manage the fund for the suppoit of the presiding biahop, and to ollot and invest the endowment for tnat purpose; and when the annual interest inter-est on this fund shall reach the aum of $5, 000, such interest shall be paid to the presiding bishop and his salary and the assessments on the diocese shall cease. The Convention then adjourned till Monday. |
