Show TELEGRAPHIC Swing Be Tore the Chlrngo Prebytery Appeal to tlie Synod. Chicago, 13. The Chicago Presbytery Presby-tery held an adjourned meeting yesterday. yes-terday. The subject of Prof, Swing' withdrawal was discussed. It was voted. that Dr. Swing be considered as fully withdrawn. Mr. McLetxl then presented a protest signed by five members of the Presbytery, W, H. Vandor, James McLeod, J. G.Burcell, Francis Patton and L. J. Halsey against this action. The reasons given were that tlie majority acted with undue haste in a request so unprecedented un-precedented in the church; that it was unconstitutional, that the action is dangerous as a precedent, weakening the pwer of the chnrch courts m matters of discipline, as it gives offending members mem-bers the privilege of demanding that 1 their names be erased, ifthey fear admonition or censure ; that the Presbytery shoald refuse the application appli-cation while Swine occupies the pulpit of one of its churches, and that the Presbytery owes it to its own dignity, not only to refuse the bold and ill - advised demands of said Swing, hut it would have been justified justi-fied in rebuking that wnyward brother on addressing to this body such a defiant letter, for we believe such expressions ex-pressions and such contempt of or for this court are censurable andnot praiseworthy; praise-worthy; and we believe that this Piesbytery seriously erred in not expressing ex-pressing its unqualified disaproval ol such conduct. I , J. B. McLure protested against the 1 use of the words "wayward brother." I A lively discussion as tt the observance observ-ance of order and the proprieties ensued, en-sued, and .considerable feeling was manifested Jt committee was appointed ap-pointed to consider-the protest. Dr. Swazey was appointed to conduct the defense for the Presbytery before the Synod, but refused to serve, and Dr. Hurd was appointed, and tioorge C. Noyei was appointed to represent the ' Presbytery in all matters pertaining to. the entertainment of the appeal by the Synod as preliminary to its actual trial |
