King, of Indianapolis, testified that Green, one of Sanborn's agents, called call-ed at his office last January and introduced in-troduced himself as a special agent of : the Treasury Department, showing a I letter of credentials to Mr. Hogate, ! Collector. Green stated or conveyed I tho idea that ho had been sent by tho I Commissioner of Internal Rcvrmuc to collect back taxes on dividends from the Indianapolis and St. Louis It. R. Co., and went to the company's office next day ar.d collected tho tax. There had been no question ot tho liability of tho company lo tho tax. and its secretary had called several times at tho Collector's ollico and had been referred to the Assessor, who had somo question in his own mind whether the rate of taxation should be 5 or 2X per cent. Green was before tho committee and denied positively all of the statements state-ments of iving. In the District iuvct'galiou Colonel Wright testified to excessive overcharges over-charges on certain streets and avenues both in the prices and measurement. In Louisama avenue they charged 4,000 yards moro than tho actual measurement. Governor Shcphard explains that this charge was made to cover work done by the old corporation which had never been paid for. Archibald White stated that condemned con-demned material was employed for tho improvement of Seventh street road, and excessive charges had been levied for the work. Richards, late District auditor, stated that a year ago lie had received from the Board of Public Works a statement ar.d bills for work alleged to have been performed by the old corporation, many of which cluhm were for work done when the origina' contracts were annulled. He didn't think that class of bill should be paid from the sinking fund, but he had finally paid $370,000 or 01,000, hss than the amount of the bills. |
