Barrett Bound over for Trial. 1 Additional Particulars. 1 On last evening's train from the south, Archelaus Barrett, the Cor-nishman Cor-nishman who shot and killed Lizzie Saunders at Alta, on Monday night, j was brought to this city by deputy I sheriff Florida, and confined in the i County jail to await the action of the Probate Court in his case. From the evidence given before Justice Mills at the examination, it appears that the shot was not intended for tho woman Saunders; that her receiving it was more the result of a careless, inexcusable inexcu-sable accident than otherwise. Barrett was intoxicated and quarrelsome quar-relsome Monday evening, making himself generally disagreeable about i town. A short time before the shooting shoot-ing he asked an acquaintance, nimed Jeffries, to loan him $2, which the latter declined todo, stating that Barrett Bar-rett would not pay itback. Hot words followed, and the two men fought. After separating they again met in the house of the woman Saunders, Saun-ders, where "were also several other men, and got into another fight, in which Barrett saya the Others inter fered ana Btruck ana KicKea mm. Barrett then went out, but soon after returned with tho rille, and upon opening the door, without ceremony, fired with the already known result. Undoubtedly the fatal bullet was intended in-tended for Jeffries, who was in the room at the time. Following are further fur-ther particulars of the affair received last night by Deseret telegraph: Alta. 11. On Tuesday Archelaus Barrett was examined before Justice Wm. G. Mills, for an assault on Stephen Jeflries and Elizabeth Saunders, Saun-ders, and for shooting the latter. Quite a number of witnesses were sworn, and the examination was continued con-tinued until Wednesday morning at nine o'clock. The prisoner made a statement after having pleaded guilty. Justice Mills committed Barrett for assault as-sault and intent to kill, and held him to answer before the Probate Court ot Salt Lake County in the sum of$3,-000. of$3,-000. The prisoner failed to give bonds and was conveyed to the .county jail by Sheriff Florida, leaving Alta about ten o'clock this morning. Tho woman, Elizabeth Saunders, who was shot by Barrett in the attack on Jeffi ies, was attended by Dr. Bevan and Dr.Dobrenzo, and every attention was Bhown her that skill aud kindness could bestow. Hopes were for a time entertained of her recovery, but about three o'clock p.m. on Wednesday she died. She was 33 years old and a native of Canada. |
