Show A CONDITION OP ANATtCHY." " " - i Utah in hi a condition ")f anarchy." an-archy." c have been told this so often, and it has been announced to tho world so often, that it must be considered correct that is, as nearly correct as anything emanating from the sniiio prolific source of calumnies itgainsl this Territory. A few days ago a husiiicss'gf'iitlcman of this oily, h'ghly rcspectcd by all who know him, who is not and never has been alii Hated with the Mormons, propounded somo questions on this subject, which an article in anuther column from the Portland, Oregon, Xnrs, induces us to produce here in substance. Said tho querist: "Is it not something strange that in a community whero anarchy is said to exist, life and property prop-erty bhould ho so secure; that busi-hm busi-hm should continue lo bo conducted and prosper as' it doea ; that capital should seek and find solid and ea-fo investments here notwithstanding the manifest obtl rue-ion rue-ion oflaw by the very men whe are declaring that a slate of anarchy exists; ex-ists; and that as good .oi-dcr should prevail here as any whero in the Union, although it is averred that law is in-! operative?" This is tho substanco of the gentleman's questions; and he added ad-ded that it spoko well Tor a people who had founded settlements and built tip so prosperous a commonwealth common-wealth as Utah, comparatively without with-out law, as alleged; when other frontier fron-tier communities presented actual scenes of anarchy with an abundance of law, legal gentlemen to expound it, and judicial luminaries to adjudicate under it. Thc;o pertinent queries are so ftrongly suggestive- that a thoughtful thought-ful mind, unacquainted with the character char-acter of the Federal officials here, is apt to consider tho entire bundle of allegations based on falsehood and built ii of misstatements. Laws arc enacted for the lawless, and the simple reason why Utah has been free from tho condition of anarchy an-archy which has existed in several other frontier regions, is because her people were and are law-abiding. Corrupt officials in other places have compelled honest men to band together to-gether as vigilance committees, lo do the work which should havcj been clone by the properly constituted courts. Utah has not been free from the same incubus of corrupt men sent here to fill oflici.il positions, and they have often been malignant as well as corrupt; but their malignancy and corruption though an evil, have jbecn to a large extent neutralized by the law-abiding chnraeter of the people. peo-ple. The plain truth i-s these statements concerning Uhih being ' "in a condition of anarchy" are gros-dy f.ile, and nothing more is required to prove it than a week's or month's 'cadence in Utah. They are nnulc for political pui-icscs. by a few reckless adventurers seeking political po-litical power; and are endorsed by-others by-others more anxious to secure a coveted covet-ed end than to aid iu the increasing prosperity of the Territory. |
