In tho Episcopal Convention this morning tne committee com-mittee on the state of the church reported re-ported their concurrence in tho message mes-sage from tho house of bishops in relation rel-ation to the sending of members to the next provincial syncd of Canada, and appointed as such delegates Kevt Dr. Croik, Kev. Dr. Van Heusen and Kev. Dr. Schenck from the cler-, cler-, ical deputies, and Sex. Fish, ex Governor Gov-ernor tttephenton and Judge Otis from the lay deputies. Mr. Cambridge Livingston presented present-ed a memorial from over 300 laymen in this city requesting that the con vention would not rt strain their present pre-sent ritual by placing any restrictions on the ritual as it now exUtei in the church. In the Episcopal Convention this afternoon the report of the committee commit-tee on canons on tho subject of ritualism rit-ualism was presented. They unanimously unan-imously recommended the adoption of the following: liavlvcd, house of bishops concurring, that the following follow-ing additional section be added to canon 20, title 1, section 2 : First, if any bishop have reason to believe, or if complaint be made to him in writ- ing by two or mora of his presbyters that ceremonies or practices during tho celebration of the holy communion commun-ion not ordained or authorized in the book of common prayer, and setting forth or symbolizing erroneous or doubtful doctrine?, have been introduced intro-duced into a parish within his jurisdiction, juris-diction, and as examples the allow ing are declared to bu considered as such; a, use of incense, and placing or carrying or retaining a crucifix in any part of the place of public worship; wor-ship; b, elevating of the elements in the holy communion in such a manner man-ner as to expose them to the view of the people as objects toward which adoration ia to be made, and any act of adoration of or towards the elements of the holy communion, such as bowings, prostrations, genp-flexions, genp-flexions, and all such like acts not authorized or allowed by the rubrics i of the book of common prayer, it I shall be the duty of such bishop to summon the standing committee as his counsel of advice, and with them to investigate the ma'ter. Second, It after investigation it shall appear to the b shop and standing stand-ing committee that sermons on doubtful doubt-ful docrines have in fact been set forth or symbolized by ceremonies or practices not ordained or authorized as aforesaid, it shall be the duty of the bishop by an instrument of writing writ-ing under his hand, to admonish the minister of the parish to discontinue such practices or ceremonies, and if the minister shall disregard such admonition, ad-monition, it shall be the duty of the standing committee to cause him to be tried for a breach of his ordination vows; provided that nothing noth-ing herein shall prevent the presentment, present-ment, trial and punishment of any minister under the provir-ions of section sec-tion 1 of canon 2, title 2, of the digest. di-gest. Third, in all investigations under the provisions of this canon, the minister min-ister whose acts or practices are the subject matter of investigation shall be notified and have an opportunity to be heard in his defence. The charges preferred and findings of the bishop and standing committee shall be in writing, and a record ehall be kept of the proceedings in the case. The report was ordered printed for tho use oi the members, and its consideration con-sideration was made the special order for Monday next. Tnt-re has been quite a reaction in favor of Dr. Seymour, and there will be a demonstration in his favor on Saturday. |
