Yesterday, in the Senate, Senator Humuer had a jliglit attack affecting the nerves ol i the heart, but when he returned home' he was Bntliciently well to entertain liis friends At dinner, at the close wi 1 wiiich he made allusion to the condition con-dition of his heart, and between 9 and 10 p.m. he wna taken so sick as to re-quirc-tnc uiteadanciror nis physician, and in one hour or more thereafter lie had a second attack of his old dig-ejiuc, dig-ejiuc, aityiiui pectoris. Several of hit nearedt personal friend were sent for and remained with him during the 1 night. He passed a quiet night under un-der the efloet of subcutaneou iujec- j tions of morphine. This morning, : at 9 o'clock, he was iieeping uuder the eliects of it without material change. Surgeon general Bams and Doctors Johnson and Lincoln were at that hour in consultation at the residence of tho Senator. Washington, D. C 11, 1 p.m. Senator Sumner is not dead, but is apparently dying. He does not seem to sutler any paui, being under the influence in-fluence of strong opiatca ; but his extremities ex-tremities are very cold and the physicians phy-sicians do not think the natural warmth can be restored. An immense number of friendfl and visitors, including includ-ing a great many colored people, have called at his residence. Tne condition condi-tion of the Senator was such, a,bout noon, that his physicians sent a dispatch dis-patch to Geo. F. Hoar that lie was dead, which was afterwards coutra- ,lirrl Washington, 11. The Senate Chaplain, in his opening prayer, referred re-ferred to the condition of Senator Sumner, and immediately after reading read-ing th journal, Sherman said, "Mr. president, one of our number lies UI, U perhaps dying, I therefore move that the Samite adiourn." Agreed to. The Senate then adjourned. Washington, 11. At12.45 Sumner Sum-ner was fast failing. In addition to the physicians, Senator Schun and Representatives Pierce, G. F. and K. It. Hoar arevfith hun. Dr. Brown Sequard has been telegraphed for and is on his way Bo this city. At two' o'clock Senator Sumner was still sleeping, though at intervals he would awaken, at which time lie was in great pain. He is perfectly conscious when awake and knows all friend, occasionally rallying and gayiug a few words to them. Washington, 3 p.m. Senator Sumner Sum-ner has just died. |
