Show Sending Forth tiio Mormon Mis sionaries. , From an article under the above heading, published in the San Francisco Fran-cisco Alia wo clip the following. The Baptists, Congregationalists, Episcopalians, Melhoelists and Catholics Cath-olics have, during the last two or three years, been very industrious in building churches and places of worship wor-ship in Salt Lake city, and the Methodists have, with great zeal, established Bchools and preaching places in many of the Mormon settlements settle-ments and mining camps. A great deal of money had been gathered from the christians in the Atlantic states, and a little on the Pacific slope, to build those churches and to support thoso preachers in their efforts to christianize the Mormons; but, as far as we learn, the converts to any of those churches have been very few; indeed we never heard of but one notable case, and that was Ann Eliza, just before she started on her lecturing lectur-ing tour throughout the states. Brigham seems to have suddenly got through his brain that ho ought to be doing something, also, in the missionary mis-sionary way, and at the la&t conference, con-ference, held in Salt Lake city, he appointed ap-pointed a hundred and five missionaries mission-aries to o forth to the Gentile nations to convert them from Christianity to Mormonism. Nine of these missson-1 aries are now in this city, and take the steamer Culima, on Monday evening even-ing for New Zealand and the Australian Austra-lian colonies. On the passage list at the Pacific Mail company's office, their names are registered: Isaic Groo, Mark Croxall, Douglas Swan, David Cluff, Charles S. Burton, John M. Young, Wm. McLachlan, E. IV Hoagland', John T. Ric h, F. W. Hunt, C. C. Hurst and Fred. Morris. They are chiefly young and middle-aged middle-aged men, and some of them are fee ing ttie Gcnlile woriu lor me nrsi time; sti'l a few of them havo had n very extensive polygamic experience and know just what to speak about when lliey get among the British colonists. They all go fotlh "without purse and scrip." Brigham's church gives them nothing to travel with "They have got to work for nothing aud find themselves." |
