In the houso of commons com-mons this evening, John Bright presented pre-sented a petition, signed by G0,000 members of the agricultural laborers' union and others, asking an extension of household suffrage to counties and boroughs, and for the redistribution of parliamentary seats. Trevilyian moved the second reading of the franchiao or counties bill. Hon. W. E. Foster supported tho bill. The principle involved had already been decided upon itB merits by all parties. The proposed measure whs one of such puro justice, and that its eventual passage was inevitable. Ho quoted former utterances oi Disraeli favorable to it. Henry Faw-cett Faw-cett said the agricultural laborers had been neglected in regard to education and othor things, becauso they had not been enfranchised. Tho bouse would ultimately bo obliged to concede con-cede to tho demands of au idignmt peoplo. The speaking on tho other side pointed to tho largo majority against the bill in the last session and urged that tho measure was inopportune. inoppor-tune. Tho house divided and the motion for a second reading of the bill was lost by a vote of 16b' yeas to 2G8 nays. |
