Indian troubles upon the southern Kansas frontier have of late been marked in their boldness and frequency frequen-cy and our exchanges from that State call loudly for Buoh steps upon the part of government as will proteot settlers and put a stop to bloodshed and massacre. mas-sacre. It is not long since we published publish-ed a brief item in regard to tho reported re-ported murder by the Cheyennes, of a party of survoyora upon the Cimarron branch of the Arkansas. A writor to the Leavenworth Times, of March 28th, confirms this report and adds: "The excitement is at fever heat on this frontier, and curves both loud and deep are beard on all sides against the policy of sending men to survey Indian In-dian lands and not furnishing thempro-teotion, thempro-teotion, and against the Indian policy generally. A common remark is, 'Oh! the government will give them fresh ammunition and more rifles, feed them all winter a- d let them murder white men at will.' " Tho Cheyennes are estimated to number soma 1,200 fighting men and their foray upon this party of surveyors survey-ors is generally looked upon as the opening raid of tho season's move" ments. The Times of & later date adds: "Troublo on tho frontier is becoming becom-ing a matter ot paramount interest. Hundreds of lives aro being sacrificed. "Scalping is tho order of the day." Tb.it tho Indians are wholly responsible, respon-sible, no one imagines, and the Times calls for an investigation aGd the punishment pun-ishment of traders and agents whose course may havo urged on these Indian In-dian raids, by their faithless disregard of all things save themselves by plundering plun-dering 'he savages. At the same time the Cheyennes aro known to be among the most untractablc of the tribes inhabiting the Indian territory.
