At about 7 o'cl'X-k on 5-niay morning, morn-ing, Charles Mingo, colored, presented himseif at the pj'.:;2 station, and complained to the triers that Clint Floyd, an other nwro, had cut him with a raior, aGd be asked lhat the man be arres'.cd. The e-Soers instructed in-structed him to go on ahead and locate Fioyd, acd they would fullow and arrest him. Whue they were on their way to Commercial street, the scene of the cutting, a bri;k firing of pL-to!s was heard, and hurrying their steps to the alley above th-i Salt Lake stables, they found Bid Gale, another colored, with a pistol wound in the left breast, but Floyd had tied. The police pursued pur-sued him, and after some search found him in an upper room of tho Salt Lake bouse, the door locked, and he braced against it. The partition, however, did ot extend to the ceiling, and over it Mr. Bin, one of the officers, offi-cers, soon climbed, when Foyd gracefully grace-fully surrendered, and was taken to tho city jail, where Mingo had previously been lodged. An enquiry into the cause of the cutting being made, developed the following: Mingo and Foyd had been playing poker all night, and the latter had won the money of the former; Mingo then became desperate, and tried to bluff the winner by reaching for his pistol, when Fioyd seized a razor and commenced hacking Mingo across the back and arm, inflicting some ugly wounds. It was then that Mingo called on the police, as above stated. When ho again m:t Floyd the latter commenced shooting at him, and he at Floyd; and the firing was kept up until twelve shots had be:n 5 red, two of which took effect, one in the, breast of Gale, an uninterested p-riy, and the other in the side of the abdomen of Floyd. The wounded men will probably recover, re-cover, but the attending physicUn says it was a close cull for Floyd. The caso was called up yesterday before be-fore ju-tice Cibtoo, but adjourned until un-til to-day, to get the witnesses, Mingo being admitted to bail in tho meantime in bonds of $1100. - |
