Show ' Tito FiuauciHl Oash. New York, To-day opened with ijuite a favorable feeling, and ( Wall street showed little trace of the exciting scenes of the last five days. . A large crowd assembled at the doors ' of the Exchange, which openeel as usual. The president addressed tiie j j bruke-rs, advising them to take such j : steps iis Would be likely tu allay all j excitement, and not increase it. other- wise he would ue his power to close the Kxchange. Gold opemd all.ll1, ! then rose , where it stands. Very little fluctuations occurred. It seemed as it" Wall street had almost al-most resumed its usual appearance. There was also a growing feeling of confidence, and steadiness among the city banks, both up and down town, wiih the exception of a run on the 1 1'nion IHme Savings Hank, and a slight run on the liowen's Bank, the excitement had almost ceased. Just as the street was beginning to feel assured as-sured that the end of the panic had been reached, the painful rumor started, at o:lU p.m., that Jienry Clewe-s it Co. had suspended payment. pay-ment. This rumor was soon verified, and large crowds collected before their banking house. The immense run which had continual on their house diminished to-day, nevertheless during the last few days no suspension has been heccssary, and the demands have all been promptly met until this morning. The immeeiiate cause of the suspension was the refusal by the Fourth .National Bank to clear tlie cheeks of H. Clewcs & Co. They paid Si 20,000 in legal tenders over their counters. They have now in the Fourth National Bank securities which amount to $800,000, against which they have drawn 00,000. They say an arrangement will be effected ef-fected for an early resumption, as there are abundant securities in their possession. The failure on the street causes much excitement. It was followed by many evil reports from tlie , west, including rumors of bank failures in Pittsburg and Chicago. Reports I arc also received that some western I exchanges were closal and that western wes-tern shippers were holding back their grain. Some New York houses have ' telegraphed west to stop sending grain in eonsequcnee of the difficulty in obtaining ob-taining money to honor sight drafts. At the close of business the stock i market was excited over Clewes' sus-' sus-' pension. No headway was made in j restoring confidence up to.l p. ni. I when a collapse set in. ' Most of the Savings banks have j made a rule that from oO to 00 days' notice must be given before the withdrawal with-drawal of deposits. The majority of business progressed in the usual manner, man-ner, ami so far all is right. The lioard of trustees of thcNation-! thcNation-! al Trust Co. met to-day. The report t of the committee was read, which jshows liabilities SIOOl'O.Oo. An early resumption is expcctal. ! The investigation of the committee j on (he Union Trust Company is not yet completed. There is a report that petition was filed by depodtors, with the clerk : of bankruptcy, in the Um'tal Stales District Court, to-day. to have the company declared involuntary bankrupt. bank-rupt. Vice-President Sehell, however, how-ever, denies that tiie institution is going into bankruptcy. . Boync - Co.) o4 AVall street, have brought suit against the Bank of the Commonwealth to recover 100.-.000 100.-.000 worth of securities for a small loan which they olicrcd to return, but were told that they could not have them, as they hael been disposal of. The First National Bank has issued a statement, showing assets at !?wS,-DOo.o", !?wS,-DOo.o", which fully covers the extent of its liabilities. Kichmond, Va.. 2;i. The People's. ' First National, Merchants' National, and Planters' and Merchants' banks, all of Petersburg, Ya., suspended this : morning. The Citizens' bank has de- ; dined payment. Other failures are ; reported. Brooklyn, 23. There was quite a rush at the old Brooklyn Savings ! Bank, and the officers took no advantage ad-vantage of their right to demand 30 days' notice, but paid all who presented pre-sented claims. At the South Brooklyn Savings Bank there was considerable excitement excite-ment this morning, over 200 persons per-sons being gathered at the doors of bank, aud a majority of these could not be pei-suaded that their money -was much safer in the bank. A great number of men were much annoyed because they could not get a chance to deposit money. The Eong Island Savings bank availed itself of the right to take thirty days time before paying depositors, and prevented a run, Chicago I uitllected. Chicago, 2o. In Chicago to-day there is a very perceptible excitement of relief from the oppressive effect of the New York excitement of the Inst few-days. few-days. The scarcity of currency, owing to causes that arc very manifest, is the only depressing influence now felt in business circles, and if the Idling up continues in New York, even this will soon be obviated. Our bankers are in excellent spirits. The past day has been quiet at all of the banks, anel public confidence seems to be fully re-establishal. The deposits at savings institutions, to-day, have very considerably cxccctlal the application appli-cation for deposits, " all is well that ends well." A meeting of the bank presidents of the city was held last uvening, at the Gardiner House, when Ihe-y resolved to stand by each other in case of need. Our elevators contain con-tain 1,010,201 bushels of wheat, -3, "o0,-of "o0,-of corn, e-S5,SS2 of oats, 117,030 of rye, anel 4b",070 of barley. |
