It started at (hreeo'clock that afternoon, af-ternoon, near the Draper breaker of the Hickory coal company in some dry brush along the railway track, from a spark of a freight engine. In consequence conse-quence of tho sewre drought the woods are dry as tinder; and tho lire spread with astonishing rapidity. The breaker was in imminent danger of being destroyed, but was saved by tho exertions of the miners and by the presence of largo piles of coai and dirt in front of it. The flames swept on until they reached a village situated situa-ted on the mountain slope named Quality Hill, consisting of nineteen cottages, occupied by the employes of tho Hickory coal company. These, with their contents, were so quickly destroyed, that the inmates had. barely time to escape. A hundred, people were in a short time' homeless. The loss is estimated at 30,000. The lire extended from this point cast and west, and is still raying with unabated fury. About three square miles of woodland are thus far destroyed. Several Sev-eral towns are in imminent danger of 'destruction. Rain is earnestly hoped for to slay the lire. I |
