Show ltarbarous Cruelty and Vandalism, Van-dalism, London, 14. Madrid correspondence correspon-dence gives account of outrageous acts of cruelty and vandalism on the part of the Carlists towards the vanquished van-quished at Iitialada. It says the Carlists, having been reinforced by 2,00X1 men who joined in Die combat, the inhabitants gave up in despair, some throwing away their arms and Hying for their lives, others surrendering surrender-ing themselves to the Carlists, and still others taking refuge in the church. These latter wore closely pursued, and when they refused to deliver themselves up, the Carlists broke down the doors of lite church by firing cannon balls into theni and then pouring streams of sulphured petroleum through the broaches and setting lire to the liquid as it I lowed. Tho occupants of the edifice, blinded and snllbeated, rushed nut into the open air only to meet the bayonets of their persecutors. The little force which so bravely defended the cattle surrendered, and half their number were shot down on the spot. |
