On Saturday evening suspicions rested on Richard Smith as being the person who had assailed our telegraph operator oa the 1 Gib. IJo was arrested, but on ac count of unavoidable circumstances he was held over until to-day at 10 o'clock, a. m., when the investigation took place. The prisoner was asked "guilty or not guilty," and plead guilty of committing com-mitting the horrible deed, after which he was committed to a higher court. The operator says he was telegraphing telegraph-ing a message to the operators in the county, and while so engaged thought he observed Smith go ieio an adjoining adjoin-ing room and return and place bimpelf behind him. He stood for about half an hour. As quick as the operator had finished the message and closed the kny. he was struck down and knew umuiug jxiuio uuiu wo juuu lying on a lounge in the above-named adjoining room, with his head all mangled man-gled and himself soaked in b'oad, Richard Rich-ard Smith pacing too and fro with a hatchet in his hands. He continued to walk back and forth aloDg side the lounge, making remarks concerning the deed he had done. After makiog a pause of some duration, he said, "Jeremiah hold up yourbaod! I cannot spare your life any longer! Your head is all chopped to pieces, and your brains all running out. I have murdered you!" The operator says he was resolved in his mind, weak as he was, if a chance offered itself to spring upon him, take the hatchet and kill him; but there was no chance; so he thought again the best way was to direct his mind in what way he could liberate himself and cover up the deed. So from that Smith made him swear not to reveal what had happened for t?ix months, and still kept him there about five hours without with-out any assistance, soaked in blood and perishing with cold. He was so weak and frightened that be dare not reveal anything alter he got among bis friends, until after Smith had confessed that he did the deed, when the operator made the above statement. |
