Show In the department of tho Marne, Prance, have been discovered grottoes and caverns which, in prehistoric ages, served cs dwellings and burial places. Thesidis and arches bear the marks of stone hatchets and aro provided with hooks carved from the solid rock. The bodies in these caverns lay in a horizontal position, without a remnant of covering, the bones in place and the skulls turned upward. In one cavern there were forty skeletons and all are of the short-headed type. A few jaws and bones of wild beasts werealso found. Tho flint implements discovered are hatchets, knives, punches, saws, well-cut well-cut arrow-heads and bowls, of flint and porphyry, while pierced shells, beads, and ear-rinKS are numerous. A vase and many specimens of pottery were also diserwpwd. |
