Show THE ALMTACaDEM. Almy, near Evanston, Wy., July 29th, 1872. f Editors Herald: On Saturday last this place was thrown into a terrible gloom by a fatal accident to John W. Hopkins, son of Mr. John Hopkins, foreman on the coal works. The deceased was cm-ployed cm-ployed as engineer, but had been assigned as-signed temporarily to fill the place of one of the ooal inspectors. While in lhe act of removing two loaded cars below the coal shoot, the brake of the forward car being useless, he concluded to make the coupling to the pother oars in the track, and while descending the ladder on tho forward end of the car misted his hold and fell across the rail. The forward trucks passed over him, mangling his limbs most horribly. The cars were stopped, but beforo any one could reaoh the spot he had orawled from under the car ten feet from the track. Be was carried home immediately, and everything every-thing was done that could be, in the absence of medical skill, to alleviate the unfortunate young man's suffering. Dr. Harrison of Evanston arrived in about an hour, but tho injuries were too great to give the faintest hopo of recovery. Mr. Hopkins lingered for i about live hours, retaining bis faculties i until within a few minutes of his j death. When brought to the house, the : sccccwas heartrending. He being the i only son or child, tho parents became ! utterly inconsolable. The deceased I was a favorite in camp, beloved by all I his acquaintances, and the grief of the j bereavod parents is most heartily .-bared by all. Tho body was, yesterday, yester-day, removed to Lost Creek, Utah, near Mr. Hopkins' residence, for burial. Io tho absence of superintendent C. ! T. Deuel, Mr. A. Bcaman, cashier, kindly proffered tho use of tho company's com-pany's teams, eto , to convey the escort to Kvanston depot, and rendered other valuable assistance in procuring a surgeon, sur-geon, etc. This is the first fatal accident to an American that has occurred since the mines were opened something over ! two years, two Chinamen having been i killed last summer. It is to bo re-1 re-1 gretted that there is no experienced surgeon at Evanston, where so many lived are imperilled. |
