His " Heathen Chinee" has been found in a fragmentary frag-mentary mass of old manuscript, and was written by a Benedict) no Monk. Clement Constanlinus. in the1 thirteenth century. The original, in ; Latin, is almost verbatim with the j English version given by Harte, there j being ten stanzas in each, and six j lines to the stanza, the first line run- iug i ' Quod volo ub-ervai c ;" AVhich I wish to observe, Bret's reads, it will be remembered : "Which 1 wish to remark," being merely altered to rhyme. This j similarity is said to run through the whole poem. I |
