Show TIfE ALLEGED ATTEMPT AT RAPE. Yesterday at tb poll j court, before justice Clinton, the examination of Richard Cameron on the charge of an attempt to violate the person of Miss Emma Isom was continued. In our issue of last Friday we made reference to the charec brought against Cameron and his subsequent commitment. The evidence of Emma Isom went to show that the was introduced to Cameron by a young man named Carman, Car-man, son of' the proprietor of the Colorado Col-orado House, on the evening of Tuesday Tues-day last, in front of the Walker Houe, at the solicitation of Cameron; that Cameroo invited the party to his office on the preteose of business, that the trio proceeded thither, and on arrival arri-val Cameron invited them to drink, which they did; that toon afterwards she became stupefied. Before that, however, Cameron attempted libcriiei with her which she repelled; Carman subsequently left, and shortly after sho was unconscious of what occurred. Cameron's language and demeanor were ungentlemanly in the extreme. He locked the doors and continued his efforts, until the door was broken open and she was taken away to the room where a day or two afterwards her brother bro-ther and the police found her very sick. Annie Gregcrson was examined and stated that fehe lived at the Colorado house; knew Misa Isom slightly, went with her and a "gentleman" to the room in Kimball block, and attended her in her sickness until her friends came and took her away. When eh first went to Cameron's room on the night of the attempt, he was laying on the lounge in a fetatc of nudity; she had known Camerqn previously, having hav-ing been to his office on business before be-fore that time. Alfred Isom, brother of tho young lady, testified that on going .for his sister on Tuesday evening, to the place where she worked, he was told that she was not tbcre and from remarks made became suspicious; bad followed up his search until he finally found her at the room on Kimball block over Connolly's saloon, when he and the police broko io and he took her away to his house in the 20th Ward. During Dur-ing his search for his sister he had beep offered by a man, whom he met at the store where sho worked, to tell him where she was if ho would pay him 820, which be declined as be had not the money. On finding his sister at Kimball block the man who owned the room flaid Bhe was too sick to be moved, and that Dr. Fenton Baid she was suffering from bilious fever. He called in Dr. Urmsby who said she was sick .from drinking, and could be removed, re-moved, upon which he took her homo. Major Carman was called for the defence, and said ho was the proprietor proprie-tor of the Colorado House; that Miss Isom was at his house on Tuesday evening, and appeared to be very sick. Carman, jun., son of the above, told a different story from his father; said Miss Iom was in tho habit of coming to the hotel to see her friend Miss Grcgerson, and siirueiimes stayed two or three days. He mado Miss Isom's acquaintance at tho hotel; met her about 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon; Bhe enquired for a situation; tbey met Cameron and he introduced them. They all threo went up to Cameron's office, and took drinks, perhaps three eaoh. She was perfectly willing to drink; had seen her intoxicated at tho Colorado House; saw Cameron kiss her and she him; and that, as he was leaving, she remarked if Cameron would givo her $10 he might do as he pleased. She was very quiet and seemed happy; he did not hear any outcry; they were whispering together. He, witness, left and went homo to Bupper; when he returned ho found tho door had been broken open; she looked as be for 0, not troubled at all; she left with a lady and gentleman. Saw her at the Colorado Housg Tuesday Tues-day evening in MissGrogcrson's room; sho was not intoxicated at tho timo. She was not embarrassed, but was pleasant ard talking familiarly. Mrs. Cameron, wife of tho accused, was called upon by counsel for defendant defend-ant to moke a statement : She said that she wont to her husband's office about 8 o'olock on Tuesday evening, and saw Miss Isom on the lounge and her husband Btanding by her sido. Miss Isom said sho bad been drinking drink-ing too much. Shortly after some men broke open tho door, and Misa Isom was taken away. Judge Clinton, in his remarks, commented on the sanctity in which, in thia oommuuity, femalo virtue is held, and he, for one, having a family, felt bound not only to protect tho virtue of his own daughters, but also those of others. This man, Cameron, had already Ibeon brought beforo him oc several occasions, charged with crimes of fraud and various misdemeanors, some of them almost equal to tho present one. Ho said the evidence was not conflicting, but tended to shon that tho testimony of the young man Carman, son of tho proprietor of ibo Colorado House, was directly opposed to that of his father. He believed in that of the latter; but had gravo doubts of the statements of the former. In fact, io his opinion, tho affair between be-tween Cameron and tho younger Carman Car-man savored very inuch of a oolusion or nartnershiu iob. The young lady who was only seven teen years of age, was introduced by Carman at his request. Sho testified sho had been decoyed into Cameron's office under tho pretence of busincps oonnooted with a situation; that all then went up stairs together and on arrival at the offico Cameron brought out some wine, or whiskey, of which all of thorn partook two or threo times; that altcrwards Carm in left .Cameron with his victim, and did not return for ono hour, leaving ample timo for tho acoomplishmeut of any purposo entertained en-tertained by Cameron. The ovidence of Annie Gregorson was corroborative of that of the girl Isom, only perhaps more full in detail. Tho Judge charged that ho should send tho matter to tho Probato Court tor trial and bound over the prisoner in $3,000 rcoognizinccs, to appear at the next term of tho Court. Cameron being umible to obtain the requisite bonds was remanded to jail. |
