Show (Bj W. U. Telegraph. THE STORM OX THE EUROPEAN COAST. London, 16. A dispatch from Stras-laud Stras-laud of to day'a date reports forty vessels ves-sels totally wrecked in the late gale. The town is considerably damaged by the inundation. Fishermen on the islands ol Cienge"t, Dars, and Hidden-sal, Hidden-sal, lost all their fishing smacks and apparatus. Their houses and contents were greatly damaged by the water. Nearly all cattle on the island were drowned. Wells were flooded from the sea and the inhabitants suffered for want of fresh water and shelter. Go- : vernment hu dispatched a steamer laden with supplies to their relief. The Island of Ringewalso felt the disaster heavily. Many of its fishing boats were destroyed and the fields near the coast were flooded. The loss of life, both on the islands, and on the mainland main-land is very great. Copenhagen, 16. The storm which 1 raged in north Europe on Wednesday and Thursday was very disastrous ' throughout Denmark and on the coast. The wind blew a hurricane, rain and 1 snow fell and the streams overflowed : and inundated the country for miles. 1 Great damage was done in seaport ' towns, and numerous marine disasters ' occurred. Reports of the loss of ' twenty-four ships have already been " reoeived. Half the town of Prasto on an i land in tho Baltic was laid waste by the force of the wind. The small island of Batoy was entirely submerged and all its inhabitants drowned. -mm . |
