Carpenticr, residuary legatee, testified to the circumstances cir-cumstances of the making of the will, and that he knew nothing of the marriage mar-riage of the deceased to Matilda Heron except by hearsay. Tho investigation of the question of the marriage to Matilda Ma-tilda Heron was objected to and the objection sustained by the court, she not being represented in court. The independent Republicans met last night, elected officers, and discussed a platform embodying the following principles: Tho one term system for the United States presidency; election by the people of the United States senators; reservation of public lands to actual settlers; revision of the civil service demanding stricter guarantees from officers and punishing defaulting officers in addition to the existing punishments, pun-ishments, by a loss of citizenship forever; for-ever; in treaties with foreign powers to pay attention not solely to commerce but also to the interests of the population, popula-tion, relating to the Chinese treaties; to ameliorate the condition of tho laboring la-boring classes by harmonizing legally the relation between employer and employe; em-ploye; granting a general amnesty; to enact a law providing for pledging under un-der oath before a proper judgo every elected officer on the platform upon which he has been elected, and to punish pun-ish recreants for perjury; to deny all subsidies solicited hereafter; and to abolish all protective tariffs, imposing customs simply for raising a revenue. In the stock exchange board the committee appointed to report on the Stanford McDonald excelsior sale affair, af-fair, reported that Stanford was delinquent delin-quent i? 1 2u,0u0 on the purchase. This puts Stanford out of the board till the claim is settled. The stock sold at So in the board to-day. The Silver Lake mining company, j was incorporated to-day. San Mateo, 20. A terrible accident occurred here to-day near the railroad 'depot. A man, name not given, went between the cars and was standing 'there, when the train started, knocking knock-ing him down, a car passing over his body, killing him instantly. Dispatches have been received here to-day, inquiring as to the effect of last night'searthquake. Not a dollar's damage done in San Francisco. XE ADA. Virginia, Nev., 20. About 2:4u this morning, serious shocks of an earthquake, lasting about a minute, were felt here and at Gold Hill. No damage done save a big teare. Elward Talbot received quite a severe injury last night from the earth falling on his head in the tunne! of the Belcher mine. A stooe struck him on top uf his head, causing severe concussion, concus-sion, and rendering him insensible over four hours. A woman whose name is withheld died to-day under circumstances which induced the coroner to call a jury of inquest. in-quest. She had been intoxicated for a nambcr of days and her person wa found to be bruised and discolored. Another woman who appears to have been a stranger in the city, was found ' in an insensible condition on Stock-j ton street, between Lombard and. Chestnut ibis afternoon and died in the hospital this afternoon. She. was apparently about twenty-five years of age, medium height, thin brown 1 hair, and large grey eyes, was neatly 1 dressed, had a plain gold ring on the I marriage linger, and gold and ename-I ename-I led ear rings. Arrived, early this morning, the steamer Montana from Honolulu, with 160 passengers from Autralia.New Zealand and Honolulu. Hon-olulu. It is stated that in case the governor signs the bill to enable tho present incumbents in-cumbents of city officers to retain their positions for two years more without an election, the Democrats in this city will take steps to have an election called, vote for candidates, and claim the positions, resorting to the supreme court for a mandamus. This is the pro gramme already announced. " An assignee's sale of 730 shares of the North Star mining company, Grass vulley, was made to-day, at $70 per share. The fact that general Porficrio Diaz, of Mexico, is now in San Francisco, is pretty well attested. He intended going to Mazatlan, but 1 here ia so little doubt of the collapse of the rebellion that it is thought he will abandon the project and rjturn to New York. The jury in the case of Dickson and Marray, indicted for rape ou Catherine O'Hara, went out at 3 p.m. and returned re-turned at a quarter to 4 with a verdict of guilty as charged in the indictment against Dickson, not guilty against .iiurray. 1 uc auuiencc attempted to, applaud, but the officers checked the: attempt instantly. Dickson was as pale as death. He was immediately I ironed and hurried away to jail, an ex-1 cited crowd following him down the steps and up the street as he went. I The verdict, though not so full as an-! ticipated, appears to give general sat-! istaction. No case tried sinco that of Mrs. Fair, not excepting that of "The Chicken" has attracted so much attention. at-tention. The victim has been kept in jail ever since the arrest of Dickson, to prevent her being spirited away. The poor, girl will now be restored to her mother and kindly cared for by sympathising friends. Dickson will be sentenced on Saturday. Visalia, 27. About half past two this morning we were again visited by an earthquake, though nothing to compare com-pare with the one the night before; several shocks havo been Telt during the day. The weather is cloudy and indications of rain. Los Angeles, 27. The sentence of tho convicted rioters, eighteen in number, num-ber, including Creaham who was tried separately, is set for Saturday next. Most or all of tho cases will be appealed. ap-pealed. The remainder of the riot cases will be transferred to San Francisco Fran-cisco for trial, on account of the diffi-coulty diffi-coulty of obtaining a jury in this or the neighboring counties.
