A special dispatch from Brownsville Texas says ; The grand jury of the federal court ofjudge Merrill, indicted tho Mexican general Cortina for levying war against the United States, and made presentment of the armed bands of Mexican raiders engaged in stealing cattle on the Texas border, lor the purpose of securing protection from tho United States gov-vernment. gov-vernment. The presentment charges that depredations of war, havo been waged since 1865 by Mexican bandits. Mexican robbers exist in gangs between be-tween tho Neuces and Rio Grande riv-i ere and informers are threatened with death. The presentment also says that Juarrez has been petitioned to remove Cortina, but without effect. The evidence evi-dence shows that since the close of the American civil war, on an avarage 500 head of cattle have been stolen monthly, the valuo of which is estimated at $6,-300, $6,-300, and during that time a number of government inspectors have been killed by marauders, and tho officers there are in danger of their lives, and a United Uni-ted States force is asked to protect them. J udge Merrill and general McCook indorse tho statements in the presentment. |
