Show UNVKILING OP THE GREAT CINCINNATI FOUNTAIN. CuiTP.-iioruIenoo of tho Herald. Cincinnati, Ohio, October Olh, 1S71. In this groat and beautiful but dry and dusty mart we arc- sitting on an elevated stand, prepared by the authorities au-thorities for tho "invited guests." It is half-past eleven o'clock. Just bo-fore bo-fore us, to tho bight of thirty feet. 1 rises a shaft, covered with a thick veil of cotton fabric. Around, on every : hand far ns tho eye can see on all ; the streets, from all tho balconies and ; windows, from out tho foliago of j shade trees, and from the house tops, a sea of faces glowing with gladness appears. The hurried preparations of many days have ceased; tho most extensive ex-tensive arrangements for tho occasion are completed; tho orators have, ono alter another, " complied with tho demands de-mands of the occasion an occasion such as no city eavo this can boast. They liavoj touched upon the first conceptions of this publio blessing in tho brain of Mr. Tyler Davidson, and upon the efforts of Henry Probasco, his brother-in-law, after hU death, to carry out these conceptions; and finally upon the threo long years of labor in the foundries of Munich to mould in bronze what tho master soulptors had moddlcd in plaster, and its safo shipment ship-ment to our shores, and final orootion by the skilled hands that had wrought it. .Before ua stands this wonderful work of art the most magnificent of tho kind in the world, and only hid from the gaze of the multitude by the thin veil that covers it. The bands which wero stationed at different points responding to each other in strains of .stirring musjc havo ceased, and the noble form of Henry Probasco is seen advancing to the front of tho platform from which tho speakers have addressed tho peo-plo. peo-plo. He stretches forth his hand, and waves tho signal! Tho covering drops! Kevealed in glorious proportions, like a column of glittering gold, stands a collossal female figure, with outstretched hands, as if in the act of giving to all. The thrill of surpriso and delight which shot through tho multitude was too intense for utterance, and for a brief moment the silence was as if all had ceased to breathe! While tho fixed oye still gazed, the waters burst in silver sprays from the outstretched hands, and ro3e in laughing jets about her ui the air! The spell was broken, as of loosened thunder, burst from tho gathered thousands, until it seemed to raise the canopy of the skies above us, while amid the crushing of falling plat- j forms the bands took up tho chorus, as if to the very gates of the Father of waters! The multitudes, who may riuench their thirst at this beautiful fountain in ages yet to oonie, will bless tho man who conceived, and tho one whose munificence gave to them this proud monument to privato worth and true greatness. No other city on tho continent con-tinent could beat this, escopt your own whoso bright waters afford the ' means, of a loftier jet from any of her public squares, and this, X am visionary vision-ary enough to hope, her people may 1 i see. This week closes tho industrial exposition, which in every aspect, has ; i been a proved success. ! . As ever yours, L. B. |
