Lion 11111 Jliuci.-TUe Cave Hoad ; It u I mi it g. 5tlnm lit General. . .Ultcellaneoui, etc. Lion flux, East Cauuu, ! -July 30, 1671. ; Editors Herald : iibiee my former visit to thio place, i a number of ii"W mines have been 1 : opened on th,- brow of the hill, paral-j ; lei with and nar to tho Mountain; ; Lion and Blue Whig mines, and from nearly all ot' these as fine oro is being mined as ever cauio out of tho hiil. .The Silver Exchange, owned by Tier-1 Tier-1 nan & Co., shows a large body of splcn-! splcn-! did ore; as also the Last Chance, the . owners of which have run a drift from : ' the end of their tunnel fully 60 feet ' upon a continuous ore lode or deposit, 'and they havf al-o struck a fine body! ! of ore upon the same lino in a second; j cut or tunnel some distance from the' west end of the drift referred to. The : stratification uf the limestone on the 1 hill is horizontal and much broken up, land tho ore deposits exist until you. i get down to tho Tiger mino, in paral-! I icl ranges running with tho lines of I latitude and in close proximity. All "tracing out" yet accomplished by conflicting claimants has been in the I direct lino of the locations lengthwise, I and there seems to bo no transverse connection between the lodes. j THE CAVE IN TUE UILX, Discovered by dipt. Allen's Tunneling Co., is only curious as involving spec-! ulation as to whether it will let tho ; bottom out of tho mines below which j it is situated. I entered it for only a short distance, but could distinctly hear the blows of the drill in the Blue j Wing shaft which i ubov-; it. It is a succession of cavities nearly horizontal, and generally too shallow for exploration, ex-ploration, and hence is of unknown un-known extent. Tho hill generally, howovor, as far us explored, shows ! these cavities, or rather fissures, but I on a less extensivo scale than iu this i particular instance. Most of tbc miners hero aro of tho opinion that when the mines aro worked to a depth below the broken fissured top formation, the character of tho couutry rock may change and tho ore deposits become more regular. Such has been the case in other localities, and several tunnels have been started hero with the confident confi-dent anticipation of a similar result. ROAD BUILDINU. The Walker Bros' have built a road on the south sido of tho hill, from SU-veropolis SU-veropolis to their mill, which is now boiug supplied with ore from iho Tarn-1 pico mine, and another road is being' constructed on the East Canou side, which, when completed, will enable the mine owners on this hill to cheaper freight their ores to the valley below. Theso arc much needed improvements, : as tho difficulty of freighting ores down i the mountain has heretofore been a heavy tax on the mines. ; MISCELLANEOUS. j The operations of the smelting works : of Drake, Sehofield & Co., under the I superintendence of Mr. James Shields, i prove that such works may be made, by economic management, profitable. These works, since they have changed i hands, have been continuously success-I success-I i'ul. I learn that at Camp I'ioyd, " grim visaged war has smoothed his wrinkled front," and everything is lovely. Walker Bros' mill Is running upon ores from the Tampico mine. It must soon stop in that direction, hut when the road is completed on this side the mountain, it may run continuously for a length of timo that will reimburse the owners beyond the outlay foi the cost of construction, for they have in the Tiger Combination an immense amount of fine ores. Still I think that they will find that a roasting furnace is essential to the reduction of these ores up to an approximate valuo at which the cost of roasting will be more than compensated by tho additional yield of bullion. Geo. Hearst, Chambers and others, from California, havo gone over to Camp Floyd to look after their mining interests in that district. If ours, &c, Wabatch. |
