The excitement over tho New York news this evening has been intense, but the police have been active in preventing any serious colli.-ions, and generally everybody has abstained from remarks or discussions of a character to provoko a breach of the peace. The ultra Catholic Irishmen Irish-men genorally denounce tho Orange parade in unmeasured terms as an outrage and an insuit to a very lare class of our adopted citizens; but beyond that no ono seems inclined to go- A Polish tailor, named Alfred Shoppenski, who stabbed himself and cut his throat in a fit of insanity, died this morning in the city hospital. Street Superintendent Ashley Iiub divided the city into two districts, and ia organizing a lorce to commence work immediately swooping the streets ! in tho night time, in order to avoid ! discommoding tho public with the dust. Sullivan was arrested. The Young Men's Republican club is holding an enthusiastic meeting at Dashaway hall this evening, which is addressed by Win, H. Sears, who will canvass the district for the Republican ticket. Misa Anthony this evening in her lecture attempted a defense of Mrs. Fair, when there was such a general hiss that eho immediately changed the subject. Santa Barbara, 12. The steamer Pacific arrived at 6 p.m. to-day. About 2 o'clock on the first night out of San Francisco, John Hunt, a passenger, fell overboard. The steamer was backed and every exertion made to save him, which proved unavailable. Judge Seldeu S. Wright broke his ! leg on board the steamer Pacific, while in port here. Antioch, Cala., 12. This morning the body of Jos. Johnson, formerly an engineer at tho distillery, was discovered discov-ered about six miles east of town, lying ly-ing dead from the effect of a gunshot wound in the abdomen. Iiis gun broken at the stock and a dead hare at his side, gave evidence that in striking strik-ing at the haro with tho butt of his gun, it was discharged. A coroner's jury returned a verdict accordingly. Sacramento, 12. It was alleged in the petition, that tho board had levied a! tax wholly insufficient to pay the in-1 terest, and had in fact evaded the provisions pro-visions of the law rcquirins them to levy a tax sufficient to pay the inter-1 est, by levying a mere nominal sum; and the court was a.-ked to compel! them to levy a ux of iu cents on the ! hundred dollar?. The eiect of this decision is' to practically nullify the bonds.
