Show Wanting Company. Deputy: Marshal Firman is an industrious, J energetic soul, who bates to be idle. ; He is running tho penitentiary in the absence of Marshal Patrick, and he ot tired looking around its silent and melancholy walls. He thought there ought to be somebody there to keep the place lively, not that it amounted to much in tho way of confinement: for privately we incline to the opinion that the deputy marshal thinks a man with half an appetite could soon eat his way out. But he wanted somebody in there, and so he called on Warden Rockwood for the Territorial convicts. The Warden is a critical sort of a gentleman, who wants to sec tho papers, you know, when he is required to deliver up a trust; so he asked to see tho deputy Marshal's authority for tho demand as if the word of a deputy marshal wasn't sufficient without written warrant or authority! But tho deputy wanted some prisoners, and so, that be might bo gratified, one was turned over to him but under protest; catch the Warden napping! Oh, nol He's good to keep half a score of legislatures legisla-tures straight on ways and means, and to look after an indefinito number of deputy marshal'?. Hero is the protest: pro-test: Warden's OQico, 12th Ward, Salt Lake City, August 9th, 1871. D. It. Firman, l. S. Deputy Marshal for Utah Territory: Sir: You having demanded of me tho surrender of the Territorial convicts con-victs in my custody, to yourself, as TJ. S. Deputy Marshal, and on my ' demanding your authority for so doing, you replied that you had no papers from any court, on the subject, but it , was tho order of Marshal Patrick, I, before witnessc?, i'orbado you taking ' any of them without an order from a court having competent jurisdiction. : t, further, bavo to inform you that if i you take any of the convicts it will be under my official protest, which is hereby made, and what you do in the premises you will be held accountable for. Respectfully Y'ours, A. P. Rockwood, Warden, having Territorial convicts in charge. There's tho document, but the deputy didn't go away lonely; he got one companion to share his sorrows; and since 11 a. m. yesterday, in looking look-ing over tho matter and tho law relating re-lating thereto, we think the Territory and its tax-payers can stand this kiud of business about as long as Marshal Patrick and deputy marshal Firman. It is to be hoped they have got a good ! thing in argentiferous galena; it will be needed by and by. |
