Show Buying up the Telegraph. Tho New York Tribune, uses the following plain language to President Grant, relative to his postal telegraph scheme : Then as to "uniting the telegraph system of the United States with the postal system," can the President bo unaware that this means buying out the present stockholders in telegraphs at treble the cost of constructing the existing lines, and thus enriching a small number at the expense of tho great body of their fellow citizens ? lie ought to know this; for we warned him of it personally a year ago, and then advised him that the people would not stand it. Mr. President ! be entreated to get out of this job and keep out I Ic Is certain to damage r you if you do not; for there will be a revolting odor generated by its cou- summation. Thirty millions are to be taken out of tho treasury by it to pay lor property that never cost ton millions; mil-lions; and not one dollar of that thirty !' millions will ever como back again. Indeed, you tell ua that the proposed : system would "secure tho further ad- vantage of extending the telegraph through portions of the country where . private enterprise will not construct it." Not a doubt of it ! Only throw the cost of extending and maintaining ": the telegraph on those who don't use it, and wo can have poles and wires, offices and batteries, superintendents ! and operators, where there is no busi ness, and probably never will be. But, until the post ofiice is made to pay its own way, wo insist that it shall lot the V telegraph alone. Nor will congress vote otherwise, unless the members are plied with other than, legitimate ( inducements to go wrong. |
