Show Pi'RU'iCATiON. Chicago, since hav ing been materially puritied by tiro, is now okaying to purity tho municipal government. Two of the aldermen have been convicted of receiving bribes and aro now serving out their sentences in tho county jail. This movement in favor of reform, inaugurated by Chicago, Chica-go, is the only effectual mode of curbing curb-ing official rascality. Men who reap largo profits by a betrayal of their public pub-lic trusts, arc enabled through the wealth gained by fraud and corruption to defy or live down an impeachment of their honesty, unless that impeachment impeach-ment is followed by conviction and punishment. Society is not yet so demoralized de-moralized as to recognize the respectability respecta-bility of a convicted felon. Powerful as is tho influence of wealth, and as effectually as it often serves to efface the blot of suspicion, and even the proof of corruption, it cannot relieve men from tho disgrace of a conviction and judicial sentence. Chicago is entitled en-titled to tho honor of initiating the proper plau of dealing with corrupl officials. |
