Show 1CUI PRAY MRS. The Secretary of the Navy has re-: eently published a little volume of prayers, written by the Kcv. Mr. New-! man, Chaplain of the United States Senate, for the use of the adventurous men who have sailed in the J'otaris, in search of the North Pole. The coui-i pilers of the usual prayer books had prepared prayers for almost all the ordi- j nary incidents of lifc;but they neglected: the North Pole business. Hence the1 necessity of this little volume. In the present fierce condition of the. thermometer, anything icy aud oool is soothing and refreshing; therefore wc trust we shall not be accused of irrcv- i crence if we introduce to our readers a' icw of the artie beauties of this somewhat some-what frigid little volume. Tim "prayer on leaving the mu" informs the seals aud walruses that "We arc here to explore the unknown ; regions of our earth, to enlarge the scope of human knowledge, and ad-! ad-! vauee the best interests of mankind." i On these premises is based this re- ' markable unnecessary supplication: ; '"Be pleased to suggest to our minds the direction we should take, and point . out to us the path which will lead us to the desired destination, that our hearts may be glad and rejoice in theconsum-, mation of our plans." We consider this petition quite useless. The diree-, diree-, tion they should take, wc take it, ii northward: and of all people the Van-kee Van-kee tar is peculiar in generally knowing which way to steer when he knows where he is going. The most exiui-ite gem uj'ihi.- unitjuc collection is called "PKA1 i;r at the north PULE." The bare idea is wonderful. It tninceiids the grandest poetical flights of fancy, and proves its reverend inventor in-ventor to be possessed of a lirt-class article of. 'tine frenzy." Conceive, if you can. of a camp meeting round the North Poio, and the chaplain on the ' ton of the P.'I solemnly offering up wc jip;oc iij.ii -ou.ci Le the direction.! direc-tion.! prayer. We can imagine the apiendid the waving ol' the aid Ujs' the ice uiuuutaim: the coolness oftLe j.ir the rigid devotion of the manner in I all li-it Bit we have not bf.n jbir to see the peine about ciuULhiu-c "liL'iHy, education, ind 1 reiijiou"' in a rtion where a Polar bear could not get bislife insured. 1 attifiurc Saturday SSlg'tf. |
