NEVADA. Elko, 20. A passenger on the west bound train this morning offered a $10 greenback at the Elko llouse, in payment l'or his breakfast, which was accepted and the change given, lie afterwards created suspicion by an earliest conversation with other parties, and some remarks overheard caused a close re-esamiuation of the hill which was proved to be a counterfeit. Upon demand the change was refunded, but the party claimed ho had no other money to pay for his breakfast. It is believed that threo or lour on the tiain are interested in passing counterfeit coun-terfeit money. Smith Van Dreilcn will run a scini-weckly scini-weckly stage between here nnd Mountain Moun-tain City, leaving Elko Wednesdays and Saturdays. About three o'clock this morning a fire broke out at No. 24, D street, which spread so rapidly as to get beyond control until it had swept everything on the east side ol IJ street from Sutter avenue, both sides ol' 2d and tho west side of 4th streets, and doing considerable damage on the west side of D street. The loss is estimated at $150,000, on which there ia souio insurance, but tho amount can't bo ascertained to-day. About fifty buildings wero destroyed, all of them wooden. A large portion of the satno ground has now been burnt over for the second aud a portion for the third time within six months. The lire is supposed to have been incendiary, and a young man named tlcilshorn has been arrested aB the guilty parly. 1 A shooting uffray occurred to-day between Andy Graham and a man, name unknown, cy which an innocent party, a young man named Henry Leller, was shot through the flesy part of the thigh. At 3 o'clock this afternoon, two men named Fraynor and Malone had a light on tho divide, in which the i former cut the latter with a knife across the abdomen, causing tho intestines in-testines to protrude. CALIFORNIA. Sucker Flat, 20. Last night about half past 10 a fire broke out in the kitchen of Barney South's hotel, at oimtnvtiie, wuicn inreatenca serious results to the whole town, but was bravely fought by the men of this place and Smithville. A Mr. Reddin,an old Virginia City fireman, was slightly injured in-jured by the falling of a building. The damage is slight. San Di-go, 20. The sheriff of this place received a letter from the residents of the northwestern part ol'this county, asking protection from the Indiana known as old Mi.-sion Indians. They have driven off their oldchief Manuel, who has been for years recognized as , the Captain General of several tribes, and they threaten the extermination of all white settlers in that section. If precautions are not taken immediately, it is feared there will be an outbreak similar to that of several years ago. lxis Aneeles, 20. The attendance at the Agricultural Park Bay District Fair this week promises pro-mises to be large. Many strangers are in town to attend it and the Mechanics' Fair. A shipment of California sparkling muscatel to Paris will be made this week. This is the first order for sparkling wine ever received in California Cali-fornia from Paris. Coi. Von Schmidt telegraphs that he will have everything in readiness to commence work on both ends of the Lake Tahoe water Company's tunnel, by September 1st. aud a working force is already engaged. Louis Siegel, who attempted suicide by taking morphine last week, was seut to the insane asylum to day. E. O. Wakeman. au old Califoruian veteran of the Mexican war, and well known to all San Franciscans, was arrested to-day on the charge of forgery of an endorsement for a soldier's warrant for one hundred dollars in favor of Bernard Diller, committed in ISO'S. He has been acting act-ing for some years as a bounty and pension claim broker, and had become quite dissipated. The arrest was made ; at the instance of a special detective from Washington, sent ouL to investigate investi-gate tho matter. He made a written confession of his guilt. |
