Show ExPEm;D EELEASE.--TLere' pb-ome pb-ome eipcctititn enwctaiLcd yest-if-day, that the men illegally held In custody cus-tody were to be immediately released. The expectation was based on a press dispatch from Washington, which will be found on our Fecond page, intimating intimat-ing that general Bates had telegraphed to Mr. High to take the proper steps to havo them liberated. On enquiring of Mr. High whether he had received such instructions, ho declined to E3y, intimating thut he had received a telegram tele-gram but that it would not be proper to make it public until he had further information. Whether the gentlemen will be released before a certified copy of the decision of the United States supreme court is received, which could not be before early in next week, we cannot say. But if instructions such as the telegraph has reported were forwarded for-warded to and received by Mr. High, , we see no reason why they could not be accepted a3 valid. When an order was received from general Bates that motion be made to admit thcio men to bail, judge Mc-Kcau Mc-Kcau accepted it as sufficiently valid to admit some to bail on the strength of it, and refused to do so with others. We learned yesterday afternoon that a telegraphic message had been sent to Washipgton relative to the subject, and some action in regard to it may be taken soon; but it is merely a matter of days, for a.s the highest tribunal in the land declares they arc illegally held, it follow. that they must be discharged. |
