Show Hyde's Hoad Steamer. Col. Hyde, tho piopiiotar of tho road steamer, called upon us yesterday andl g:ive us some particulars of the 7ork-1 ing of tho "machine" upon it, recent I trip from Lako Point to Stockton and ! buck. The trip being entirely an ex- i perimenlal ono, many drawbacks, of course, had to bo encountered, among which was a lack of water, that could not bo obtained on tho rout at points ufficicntly frequent to suit tho stoamcr; this, however, can bo overcome by having regular stations with watering conveniences, as on u railroad. Tho freight up consisted of coal for distribution on the road and timber for bridges at Tooele, tho, lo;id weighing, exclusive of the wagons some fourteen ton; They were delayed de-layed two days at Stookton, colieetiug a load for the return trip, which consisted con-sisted ofiO.OOO lbs of bullion from the j Stockton smelter, and which w des- j tined for this city, and about 20,000 ' lbs of ore, making with extra water, fuel and tho wagons some twenty-nine tout. The runuing time was at the rate of two miles per hour. The machine ma-chine worked to the entire satisfaction of Col. Uyde, indeed it did moro than ho had heretofore claimed for it in rjuiiiiig over ravines, ridges and stony roads with an ease that was uot anticipated. The prospect for bosi-uess bosi-uess on tin- route is not at all satisfactory, satisfac-tory, aud it is doubtful whether there will bo sufficient to keep the machine employed. Col. Hyde leaves for California immediately, im-mediately, but will return in a. few days. |
