Show TOLERATION. Wo understand that on Thursday night some person interrupted one of tho speakers at the Methodist camp meeting, dnelaring that a statement made w;is false. We cannot out deprecate de-precate anything of tho kind. That the speaker so far forgot bis professed character, hi audienco and the avowed object of the meetings, as to slanderously attack and belie the com-1 wunity, is no justification of even aj word being spoken during the course of his remarks. We had unsolicited , assurances given us when these gentle-1 men came here, that their mission was) not a belligerent one, and tbat no attack would bo made upon tho religious relig-ious faith of any person; and we have consequently felt somewhat disappointed disap-pointed in the uncharitable expressions and incorrect statements made by some of tho speakers. We looked for Scriptural teachings alone according to their interpretation of tho holy Hook, and not for villitication of the people aud tho faith which has drawn the thousands of Utah together. But, on the other hand, wo also expected that i not a voico would bo raised in the meeting, meet-ing, no matter how slight, iu opposition opposi-tion to anything that might bo advanced. 1 Aud it is oia'ter for gratification that only one person, and tbat a woman, we believe, baa broken through the order that has reigned in the congregation. People who cannot sit quietly and ' hear their faith abused and themselves vilified should stay away from any plaeo whore they are likely to bear anything of tho kind. We have sat in an audience in Salt Lake City, years ago, and beard a man pour out a per feet stream of abuse and villifieatton for an hour aud a half, against the people, and have not felt the least desire de-sire to interrupt htm, though facts and data were at bund to disprove "his assertions. as-sertions. But freedom of speech i.-saered; i.-saered; and though it may descend to HcenssC of speech, the great principle thus abused should ever bo borne in mind. Wo have been iu meetings Mor-uiou Mor-uiou meetings in other parts of the world, where no man's religious faith was attacked, tnd yet a Eol.tary Baptist, Bap-tist, Presbyterian, Methodist or Kpisco. palian could not sit in quietness until tho services were through, nor leave in quietness before they were concluded, without insulting the speakers and the audience. Their religious prejudices were so strong that the usual amenities of society were lost sight of; they could uot refrain from attempting to deny to others a right they claimed to themselves that of worshipping according to the dictates of their consciences. con-sciences. The gentlemen of the Methodist Meth-odist church, who are here, have gone in for couverston on a large scale. We wish them to have crowded and attentive atten-tive audiences during their stay. We wish all who desire to hear them to go aud do so respect fuily, quietly and decently, " that these gentlemen may carry with them different dif-ferent views of Mormon tolerance to those they probably have had hereto fore. But wo would suggest to these clergymen that it is not a very wise nor a very Christian course, for any one of them to permit himself to let oft' his private feelings agjiust what he may be pleaded to call the "damnable "dam-nable delusion of Mormonism' and his co-laborers smile approval, while they aro ostensibly eudcavoriD; to ''convert" ''con-vert" the Mormons. Whatever Monuoaim may bo in their eyes, its believers are convinced jfit3 truth; and the common courto-j courto-j aiet lT civilized life should teach them j to rofpi-et the U-li-f of others, sacred .totlnH-c who bae their hopes of a hereafter upuo it. We have no devrc in r. ad these gentlemen nor their au-j au-j diei;ees Ics-hjiis in politeness, and trust j we niay nut have occasion to do so gain. If our visitors have a superior li i'Ii and can tbuw that euperioiity, it is to be hoped they wiil do so; if thej eunnot, tiny are not likely to make much headway by losing temper over ! lie matter. Nor will any person increase in-crease the men's of his or her faith 'y a breach of politeness such aj we have referred to. |
