Personal observation can alono give an adequate idea of tho facilities ibi doing a heavy business and filling large orders which many San Francisco firms possess. Take tho house of Tobio, Daviseon fc Co., importers of iiincy goods, notions, etc. Their iraiuonse rooms aro groaning under a stooV which comprises tho ohoicest English, French and German goods, imported direct from tho largest manufactories in the countries named. A walk through the rooms would satisfy any ono that half-a dozen moderate-sized stores might bo supplied from them without, apparently, very greatdimuni-tion greatdimuni-tion of stock. In American and European fancy and staple dry goods, tho houso of Murphy, Grant & Uo. ha; a stock of tho most extensive charac-ter, charac-ter, occupying an immense building filled in every part. Their capacity U do trade is simply enormous, and their business is proportionately large. In tho same connection we may class the houso of S. P. Holden & Co., importers import-ers of foreign dry goods, linens, dress goods, hosiery, etc., who have their house in London, from which stock is shipped in bulk. In the opposite description of goods hardware a visit to the stores of Brittan, llollbrook & Co., and Lock fc Montugue, would show how amply they are prepared to do business. busi-ness. Ono can walk up and down, from floor to floor, pas3 through vast Jiprms of coods of almost every con ceivable eharucter in their line, and see on every hand tho evideuces of a capability to do a great interior trade In enameled and tinnod Engtii-h hollow ware, Locko it Montague havo the heaviest stock we havo seen anywhere in America; besides a largo assortment of stoves and metals, house-furnishing hardware, tinners' tools and machines. kc; while Brittan, Holbrook & Co., in stoves and ranees, sheet iron and tin plate, lead and iron pipe, pumps, jap annod and other ware, take a leading poition in tho Uuited Slates. In men's and boy's clothing the firm of J. Baum tt Co. cmubiuea the iUc'ili ties and capacity of New York and San Francisco, having large establishments in both cities; while Eiustein Bro's & Co., with their immense boot and shot-factory, shot-factory, can ship in large quantities goods in their line specially made for and adapted to tho western trade. Ie a kindred line of business reference ma. be make to Gray, Jones & Co., manu fueturers of oak solo leather, and to J. C. Johnson & Co., who have an unusually un-usually heavy stock of saddlery, harness aud leather; both houses of unquestioned unques-tioned reliability. Another leading San Francisco Arm, in its line, is that of Armes & Dallam, importers, jobbers aud manufacturer? of wood and willow ware, and a hostol articles in every day use, with which their extensive establishment is filled. While in still in another line that ol biscuit bakers Dcetb, Starr & Campbell Camp-bell enjoy an enviable reputation not alone in Salt Lake but all through the interior. ! Under that magnificent establish-ment, establish-ment, the Grind Hotel, will bo found j another of those great importing I houses which show how far-reaching if ' tho trade of the Bay City. The immense im-mense rooms of Haynes & Lawton, agents for John Maddock & Sons', Staffordshire earthenware, and importers im-porters of all kinds of cut and pressed glassware, are well worth a visit by parties going to San Francisco. With entrances from either side, these rooms, so lofty, well-lighted and haudsome have a magnificent display of the mo' beautiful workmanship in china, earthenware earth-enware and glassware. But it is not alone in immense ystabHhuieut liiut the wealth and im porlanee of San Francisco trade are fouud. Among leading grocers, Castle Broth-1 ers, and Ileineken, Drathman k Co. I deserve special mention. The former! firm has been doiug a lively business : in thntcity; the latter proposes to do l business on tcrma mutually lati-factory j to celler and buyer. With these firms i ,hould be classed that of J. C. Merrill Co., otuniisBioQ merchants, who are well and favorably known in this city, and bold themselves open fur orders. Iu making mention of leading San . Francisco establishments we must not i omit prominent represcntalive.H of a c ass intimately associated with the j printing fraternity. Juhn G. Hodge & ! We might cuhirgc the list almost indefinitely, in-definitely, including houses mentioned by iho Herald within a recent period; per-iod; but must close with ono firm which within a few months haa opened an extensive trade with this city we refer to A. C. Dietz & Co., importers of paints, oils, varnishes and lamps. Carrying Car-rying a most cxteusivo stock in their specialties, they give satisfaction to purchasers, and can fill orders to almost nny extent. Charles G-. Clinch, Eq-, of this houso, will be found a painstaking, agreeable gentleman, gentle-man, who is determined to show what can be done by the firm in supplying tho interior trade.
