Show THE "NEW DEPARTURE." .Republican papers are having a healthy time just now over what they stylo tho "new departure" of the Democracy, De-mocracy, illustrated by the lato Ohio convention. The theory of the Repub-, lienn party is that nothing sensible can be done by tho Democracy, which the' latter party meets with the equally ele-l vated opinion that Republican doo-' trines are the sublimity of folly and the essenco of evil. The Ohio Democracy, though, has done a wiso thing inissuing the platform which accepts as a legitimate legiti-mate portion of tho Constitution the; recent Amendments to that instrument, instru-ment, and it is just this policy of pro- gressiveness, which contending against1 that Republican policy that clings to; war issues, high taxation and a means, of paying the public debt not satisfactory satis-factory to the nation, that will give the former its greatest power in tho coming com-ing campaign. Our di?patche?, published this morning, morn-ing, tell us that a certain member of the Jenkins family, who perpetrates correspondence for the New York Herald, has discovered all President Grant's private thoughts on vnrioue and sundry matters; and among them is that he fully endorses Secretary Boutwell's financial policy. Now this we consider a simple invention of the said Jenkins, for the fact is, as President Presi-dent Grant and Secretary Boutwcll well know, that tho people of the United States, taken collectively as a people, are opposed to Boutwell's policy; pol-icy; and President Grant has declared that he has do policy in opposition to the people. Jcukiusis a fraud. Tho Democracy, in leaving its old rickotty platform of a dead past, is taking a step in advance that will give it great influence in tho Presidcntal campaign. |
