Manuel Li-ano assured Whiting he had never joined Olegario with a hostile intention, but was present pres-ent when Olegario issued the order for Manuoiito's arrest. ThU closed the council for Sunday. On Monday Whiting proposed to Olegario that if ho would bury ilu hatchet, and accept ac-cept the appointment of Manuelito as chief, he would appoint him second in command, and gave him fifteen minutes min-utes to consider. Olegario consulted his followers and they refused the otlcr. Whiting then asked Manuelito to resign, which he did. Jose Antonio Sal was then appointed chief of all the Mission Indians. Olegario and followers fol-lowers arc dissatisfied. One was heard to say he would rather right, but generally gen-erally good feeling prevailed at the counoil. The citizens speak highly of the coolness and judgmont ef the Superintendent in reconciling the Indians without resort to force. The council broke up with good feeling on tho ptirt of the Indians. k lay aoa, Winuemucca, Nov., 12. The preparations for tho banquet and ball for the votorans of the Mexican war, to-; to-; morrow evening, arc on a larger scale than ever before attempted, and it promises to be a very fine affair. Gov. llaight, Governor-elect Nowton Booth and many prominent Federal and State onlcera, military men and civilians, who are expected to participate, have arrived. Prominent lawyers give their opinion that whoro two names are so nearly covered by a poster that neither can be read without tearing off the poster, though only one name is posted over, then neither can be counted, Rosener and Tliggina both suffer by the clumsiness clumsi-ness in posting, but not sufficiently to ehane.0 the result if all the ballots in the district were counted for the parties claiming theni. Frank Davis was thrown from tho ears near Butchcrtown to-day, and is supposed to be fatally inlured. San Francisco, 13. 'The result of the recount so far does not change tho general result, or indicate anv serious error of fraud. The 3rd Ward was finished last night only to the vote on the candidates calling for recount or opposed to it being counted. A communication has been received from A. Ilimculman, stating that tho demand for the recount in the Sih Ward was not made in his interests. He was j-atisGed Mr. Storey was fairly elected, and he was not desirous of taking up the time of the board. The steamer Moses Taylor, which was to have sailed for Honolulu at noon to-day, sails at 6 p. m. There are eighteen thousand children child-ren in the publio schools of San Francisco, Fran-cisco, and from two thousand to two thousand five hundred more will apply for admission at the next term. Tho steamer Gonstanliitr. will not sail ior Portland, nor the Win, Tabor for San Diego, both having been bought off by Holladay & Brenham. Charles Jul ward an old rounder, was arrested lor burglary, and Lewis Ross, another, for personating an officer offi-cer and arresting Wm. Washburne, from the rural districts, taking him into a dark alley, knocking him down and robbing him. It is now evident that the result of tho city election, as already published, will not be varied by the recount. This is the hottest day of the season. |
