Show DESPERATE FIGHT AT TJ1E STATE PH1SO-V. Quite a desperate fight occurred yesterday yes-terday between some of the convicts in the S'ate prison, near Carson. Tom Hefferman, in for life, and Russel, in for five years, were the starters of the row. Russell attacked Hefferman with a butcher knife, giving him two outs in the arm and one severe and perhaps fatal one in the breast. Other convicts interiered, and more cutting and stabbing stab-bing would have been done had it not been for Charley Jones, another convict, in for ten years, who, when the atfray was at Ls bight, rushed boldly into the crowd with a heavy iron poker, laying about with it freely on all sides, and effectually closing the battle in a very short space of time. It is said to have been a very desperate desper-ate bit of a fight while it lasted. Hefferman, Hef-ferman, it will be recollected, was one of the leaders of tbe break of December 1st, and got shot in the back. Russell was also concerned in the plot, but when the attemnt and crand rush was made to escape, he iailed to ''stand in" aud do his part. Ileffenriiin hag consequently con-sequently held a deep grudge against him ever since, which finally culminated culmina-ted in the desperate affray above related. re-lated. Hefferman's principal wound is a very bad one, aud, as we have already al-ready stated, may terminate fatally. Gold 11M News, 21. |
