The Special Committee appointed to ciBiuInc aud ltepert on Sewing .Hathluet at the Xortb Carolina State Fair, held at Ualtrign lat week awarded a Gold Medal to the Florence Sewing Machine for the eaae and quictuesM of its movements, perfection and large variet y of work, and its valuable new features, making ma-king It the most valuable Sewing Machine for family use. Parties contemplating the purchase pur-chase of Sewing Machines are requested re-quested to read the following from : the New York "Tribune" of Oct. 10th, 1870 : SKAVIAG MACHINES. We have recently had occasion to make Bouie inquiries into the progress of improvement improve-ment in the tncolnnisui of Eewing machines, aud were not a little surprised to learn lhat the central idea iu the lirst invention tke : shuttle still holds its place, though many attempts have been made to supercede it. The shuttle, in combination with the needle, is still ttie means used to form the stitch, in the leading machines, aud we find that the growth ot trado is chieily with the shuttle-u;iiig shuttle-u;iiig machines. 'Ibo improvements that are taking firm hold in practical use are, therefore, necessarily necessa-rily in connection with the shuttle, either in the detail of the shuttle itself, or in other parts of the machine oonnected with it, to cause ttie whole to operate more perfectly and uniformly, and to simplify its use. Many important gains in this direction, made since the first great invention, are undoubtedly un-doubtedly embodied in the "Florence" ma-chide; ma-chide; and we recommend our readers to oarefully inspect the "Florence" before making ma-king a choice, due points peculiar to this machine are: An unusual amount of money is spent in masing the "i'lurenee," thereby securing the beiit material (.steel, for instance, where others use caet-irou), and the linest finish of important parts (the shuttle, for example, being rigidly rejected if it varies from the. standard l-2,0uuth of an inch !) It is constructed con-structed on the simplest scientific principles, . entirely dispensing with the cogs, and cams, and links wnich so often get perversely out of order and sorely perplex every one but' the practiced machinist by their unaccountable unaccount-able freaks. The "Florence" is so easily managed, and its use is so readily learned, that an ordinary girl of ten has sense and muscle enough to run it perfectly. The lock-glitch, lock-glitch, as made by the ''Florence" is very regular and perfect, very strong and elastic, and is drawn into the fabric evenly, gradually, grad-ually, exactly, without jerking, and without causing the seam to pucker, or straining the thread so as to endanger its breaking; consequently, con-sequently, veiy fine threads and iight fabrics can be used, iiedided this, the '".Florence" (in all but the cheapest styles) also makes three additional stitches a double lock, a single knot and a double knot which are stronger and more elastic than any other stiu'h, and which are made by no other machine. ma-chine. The "Florence" is the only machine that his a reversible seed, wharaby the direction di-rection of the sewing can be instantly . changed without stopping the work, thus enabling the operator to quilt or embroider with unusual tacility, to sew backwards and easily strengthen a seam wherever desired, and, finally, by a few repeated stitches, to fasten ends in the quickest and strongest ; way. It is the only machine that has a self- j adjusting shuttle-thread tension, ' which ; works so perfectly that the operator can run ; across the ueaviest seams and sew the finest ; I linen and the thickest broadcloth in imme- diate succession withont breaking thethread and without chneing the needle, stitch or tension. The "Florence" drawa tiie thread into the cloth with unequaled precision and certainty, by means of an ingenious auto- ' matio "take-up" wheel, which disposes of the slack thread left after the stitch with an , accurate promptness that prevents all snarling snarl-ing or dropping of stitches, and allows the operator to sew backward, cr to run off the cloth and on again, with perfect impunity. It has an improved elastic hammer, esclu- ; sively its own, which is managed with ease, ' and will make a hem of any width on any material. It not oniy makes a perfect gather and sews it to a band at one operation, but it hems, and binds, and fells, and quilts, and cord, ad t'lcks, and gathers, and braida without Ciiitiu;. Jjcn special provision is made asmst injurious r that the "Florence"' "Flor-ence"' is ciaimea and guaranteed by theCom-piiny theCom-piiny to la; twice as long without repair as any other shuttle mwh'.ae in the market, without the sLUhtes; d.tneuky. Every part ; of the "Florence" is so pertectly and permanently perma-nently adju;:cd, and it has so few joints and points of fricticn, thit it runi with the utmost ut-most ease. Ihe needie U set and thradeut and the stitch is lengthened, shortened, or reversed with the utmost ut-most ease. In usine the "Florence" neither the work nor the operator's dress is liable to oe soiled. The "Florence" with ail these c aims to superiority, sells at the same price as other tirst-class machines.
