The editor of a western paper has been up the country trouting, and is responsible for this fish story : "A jovial old gentleman whom we met in our travels told a story for the truth of which we do not vouch i to illustrate il-lustrate the Dumber of fishermen upon the streams. "A few days ago.' he -aid, 'I was passing a bridge over Swift river, when I heard my name called. 1 looked around to see who spoke. No person wa- in sight, and I waa about to pass on when my eye fell upon a large trout, standing upon his tail in the river, looking as though he had spoken to me. 'Did you speak. Mr. Trout?' said I 'I. did. sir.' said he; 'I wish 10 inquire if this i the way to Bickford's mill?' 'It is,' said L 'Ain't there any other p'tite?' said he. 'Liuc-ss not.' said 1, 'unless you go by land. Why do you ask ?" 'Because the river is so full of these fish-hooks that I can never up this way.' |
