Collector Latham writes from Huntsville, Ah, there is a large amount of inter-; nal revenue tax due in the interior and I mountainous country of his distinct, ' which he cannot collect in the ordinary j way, and consequently some of his 1 deputies have resigned, and no re- i sponsible man can be found who will , undertake its collection by distraint j and sale, because they could not do so ; and live safely in the county: the col-! leetor, therefore, asks whether or not 1 1 he may bd permitted to go to the county assessor's tax books nad ascertain as-certain what the delinquents have in the way o:' property at the county ; court-house ia each county where a distraint is made, inswad of withtn ' five miles of the property so distrained, as required by the law governing in such cases. The Commissioner says, in reply, that your request we have : declined to grant lor the reasons you state, because it would concede that the laws of the United Suites cannot be executed ia your district. I intend to collect the revenue of the t aited States in Alabama as I do in Massa-, Massa-, chusetts.
