Not less than two feet of snow fell, and bo drifted that many streets in the city arc impassible. The extent ol the region reached by tho btorui is limited; but great damage has been done the telegraph wires on the Michigan Michi-gan Southern and Michigan Central, Fort Wayne aud Chicago auJ Alton, and the IJurbngton aii'i Quiney lines. Many miles of wire arc frustrated between be-tween Joliet and IJIoouiington, Ills., scarcely a polo standing. There was no frost in the ground, and the weight, of ico and snow on the poles and lines forced the pules out ol' the round. Thousands of men arc ut work in all directions pulling the linrs in oiil'-r. |
