Show SEVEN MAILS A WEEK AT EAST- x By telegraphic dispatch it will be seen that the Postmaster-General has made arrangements with the Burlington Burling-ton & Quincey railroad, by which the mail that now leaves Chicago for the west on Sunday night, instead of Sunday Sun-day morning, and which thereby fails tu connect with the Union Paci6c trains at Omaha, will be duly forwarded forward-ed so as to make the connection. The western States and Territories feel obliged to the Postmaster-General for his action in this matter, which would probably hive been attended to last session of Congress had it been properly proper-ly represented; but the necessary appropriation ap-propriation was required to have the arrangement ar-rangement made by which the west could have its daily mail seven times a week, instead of six times as at present. pres-ent. We have been surprised at the apathy manifested with regard to this matter by the western press. We believe be-lieve the Salt Lake Herald was the only paper west of Omaha which agitated agi-tated it, and the Omaha Herald, with its customary interest in all that afl'ects the welfare of the west, gave its influence in the same direction. We take some credit to ourselves for the stand taken by this paper in urging the matter upon the attention of the western delegation to Congress and the postal department; and feel gratified that our efforts hare been attended with so successful an issue. |
