Show CULLOM FOR GOVERNOR. Shelby M. Cullohi is acaiu named for the gubernatorial chair of Utah. See the dispatches. Shelby is a favorite favor-ite heie, a great favorite, though some people appear to think differently. IIuw it will please those rabid souls to have Utah affairs guided by a "stern hand!" And "more stringent nieas-uivs nieas-uivs adopted to compel the Mormons t.i be obedient to the United States laws !" What we are at a loss about, is to know what "laws" are iseant. If an ab-olnle dictatorship is aimed at, i!i ir bus been hard trjing in that ..' . mi for i-oiiii: months past. e ,-, :.. ett w nicriog whether Utah ;n free and Dligbtened America i:- tn . anl ii' ally got the point settled v lb-; "judicial opinion" which set lb: di that Tciritories furin no part of .he Liovernment of the United States. We pre.-ume the ''stringent measures" meas-ures" proposed are such, ultra and ex-c.'sively ex-c.'sively oppiessive ones as will drive the people of the Territory to desperation, desper-ation, aud afford a fair chance for driving, driv-ing, plundering and destroying them ! This may be called "statesmanship" now, but history will find another name for it. Shelby M. Cullom ruay be appointed Governor of this Territory, but we hardly think President Grant will endorse any more "stringent measures" meas-ures" towards Utah than it has been suffering from for some time. |
