Show ! ISDIAXS ! It appears that the diligence of our' friends in southern Utah, in arming and preparing for defence, has prevented, prevent-ed, for the preseut, Indian raids upon the citizens. The display of their arms proved a terror to the Navajo chief and his band; and I do not think the United States was endangered endan-gered thereby. Our Indians' here, in Sanpete, are a little restless at present; and if they should assume a hostile attitude, at-titude, we shall not wait long for orders or-ders to defend ourselves, but shall probably appear with all the military power wc can command at least, enough to quell any disturbance. This may be treason in the eyes of an arbitrary, arbi-trary, tyrannical and persecuting court. Hunger knows no law, neither do men whose lives and property are jeopardized jeopard-ized by the ruthless savage, but to deal out punishmeut to the foe, and "ask no questions for conscience' sake;" and while we have no disposition to rebel against the laws of God Or against any necessary or wholesome daws of men, I cannot regard the proclamation of the late Governor of Utah as anything better than an exhibition of shortsightedness short-sightedness on his part, and the very gangrene of oppression and hate of the people that he was sent to govern. If anything would put hell, the .devil and rebellion into men. uch proclamations proclam-ations or ediets are calculated to do it.' Bui the fact that no rebellion has been caused thereby, neither any prevented, proves that such edicts are as tyrannical tyran-nical as the devil and as unnecessary as the fifth wheel to a coach. The "Mormons'' will live while the party that acts towards them in this kind of spirit is politically dead and buried. A Prophf.t, and Son of a Pkoi'iikt. |
