Show TWENTY RECRUITS Stacey Got 19 Jennings 6 and Mur Pby i SLIM RESPONSES UP NORTH BUT THE SOUTHERN TOWNS ARK I COMING UP Stacey Going to Invade Milford and Beaver RichCounty Had Noth i lug to SendOne Recruit in Cache Two Companies of the National Guard Ask for Their Discharges 1 Six recruits for battery C were secured se-cured In this city yesterday The names of the men who applied are Thomas Gilmore Albert Hubert John Ahern Fred H Collins Thomas Aspden Henry Hen-ry L Harris A special to The Herald from Logan says Recruiting Officer Murphy came I there yesterday morning and left for home in the afternoon He secured one recruit in the person of David Muir of Mendon there being no other applicants appli-cants Murphy learned by telephone that there was but one at Richmond and that he was not likely to pass so he did not go there He also learned by telegraph there were no recruits In Rich county who wanted to enlist so he did not go there at all Recruiting Officer Stacey had better luck than both Jennings and Murphy A special to The Herald dated Wednesday Wednes-day night says RECRUITS AT RICHFIELD Richfield June 290n this afternoons after-noons train Recruiting Officer Lieutenant Lieuten-ant W J B Stacey arrived in this city Nothing was done this after noon toward obtaining volunteers but tonight a meeting was held In the Mormon Mor-mon church where volunteers were asked to enlist In battery C light artillery ar-tillery Patriotic speeches were made by Chairman Vermeil Rapp Theodore Brandley and J M Bolitho Lieutenant Lieuten-ant Stacey then announced his business and asked for volunteers and the fol lowlngthlrteen were enlisted John Henry Callahan Lyman Maycn county James S Mansen Monroe Ne phi Madsen Monroe Joshua Gardner Annabella Carl Hansen Joseph Jensen Jen-sen Elslmore Jasper N Robinson Orangevilie Grand county Isaac Bean B F Carter John E Day Joseph Hansen Han-sen Peter Hansen Joseph Salisbury Richfield The news that the recruiting I officer ffil I was to be in this l city tonight was not had until yesterday after mail time and it was impossible to get the news thoroughly over the county If this county tould have had two days notice no-tice twice the number of volunteers would have been obtained As it was the only way to get an audience at all was to have the Richfield band on the streets and in that way the house was very comfortably filled Lieutenant Stacey Examining Physician Phy-sician Neill H W Ramlose and Geo Hesslmere were t > start for Beaver tonight to-night but on account of all the young men being out of town and not being close enough to notify accounts for the small number of enlistments from Richfield Rich-field but If the recruiting officer should return twice the number would volunteer vol-unteer OBTAINED AT GUNNISON Gunnison June 29 Captain Stacey of Manti ons of the recruiting officers for the second call for volunteers held a meeting here last night Speeches were made by the town president and other leading men The attendance was large and the spirit of partriotlsm prevailed throughout The following young men volunteered and were accepted after examination James R Butters Christian Jensen Louis D Christensen George Nay Paules Peterson Roy Clarke Two others having previously enlisted enlist-ed at Salt Lake makes the number of volunteers from Gunnison under the second call eight Mr Stacey is proud of his success here He went to Salina to hold a meeting there this morning From there he goes to Richfield to night then on the Beaver and Milford Thursday A COMPANY BACKS DOWN Companies B and D of the National Guard stood by their determination to ask for their discharges and signed a petition to the governor requesting their organizations be disbanded A change came over the spirit of the dreams of A company and Its members decided that it WOUld wait me members 01 I this organization believe there is going to be another call and that they may get a chance to go In so they will wait and see what can be done Members of B and D companies stated stat-ed last evening that the statement made In the Tribune to the effect the former officers of the guard had been Instrumental In their taking the action I related was not correct nor true Their reasons have been fully set forth In The Herald and they are firm In their I determination They argue that there I Is little glory and small credit in wearing wear-ing the uniform unless they can be permitted to see service The requests will be forwarded today to-day together with the resignations of the officers desiring to leave the service ser-vice The signal corps had a very good turnout turn-out last evening and drilled with the Catlings which have been placed In Its charge The drill regulations covering work with Catlings will be procured at an early date and the corps will endeavor en-deavor to make Itself proficient with a hope that perhaps If they cannot go I as a signal corps they can as a Gatling detachment I |
