Show DfATH Of EDWARD BElAMY FAMOUS AUTHOR AND HUTVTANI TABIAN PASSES AWAY Distinguished Career of the Man Who Wrote Looking Backward Broke Down While Writing Springfield Mass May 22Edward Bellamy author and humanitarian died early this morning at his home In Chicopee Falls In the fortyninth year of his age Mr Bellamy has been in feeble health ever since he finished his Equality some eight months ago Equalty Indeed long before it was completed he had the most significant warnings that his vital energies were being undermined un-dermined although i was not until August that his physicians told him definitely that one of his lungs was affect af-fect i At the earnest solicitations of his physicians and family he resolved of the Colorado climate to try the effect Colbrdo cl mate and early in September last removed re-moved with his family to Denver where he was welcomed by a host of friends He received however little or no benefit from the change and since January has been rapidly failing When he recognized that recovery was impossible he became very anxious to get back to his old family homestead at Chlcopee Falls Mass wherehe was born and where he had lived his entire life His brother went to Denver to lfe help him realize that wish and on April 26 brought him back very weak but very peaceful to his old home i He was born at Chicopee Falls on March 26 1850 and was the third son of Rev R K Bellamy for 3 years i the pastor of the Baptist church at I Chicopee Falls After finishing a course i at Union college he completed his education j i edu-cation by a year of European travel I and study I I By the study of law he was at 211 years of age admitted to the bar of Hampton county Massachusetts From the legal profession he went I into journalism and fQr several years t was assistant editor of the Springfield Tnion From there he went to New II York City to accept a position as edi tonal writer on the New York Evening I Post where he was engaged for about on < year when he returned to Spring fild and in copartnership with his brother C J Bellamy started the I Springfield Dally News Meanwhile he published Six to One A Nantucket I Idyl Dr Heidenhoffs PrOcess Miss Ludingtons Sister and other MS LudIntons books I I was In1SSS th t his famous books Looking Backward was published the sale of which up to the present time is over 450000 copies In America and probably over half a million copies have been sold in England and other foreign countries Looking Backward has been translated into German French Russian Italian Arabic Bulgarian Bul-garian and several other languages I 1 state that Emperor William purchased pur-chased 1000 copies of Looking Backward Back-ward which he distributed among the students and working classes of Germany His reason for so doing I this is really true is apparent to those conversant with German politics On the 30th day of December 1891 Mr Bellamy being convinced that it was his duty to supplement his efforts In Looking Backward by educating the people toward reforming government govern-ment issued the first number of the New Nation a paper destined to become be-come the most quoted and influential political or revolutionary journal in the world An idea of its Influence maybe may-be judged from the fact that since the New Nation was started over 3500 papers devoted to nationalism have been launched In the United States I Canada and Mexico and thousands of papers through the direct inspiration of the New Nation have started departments de-partments devoted to political reform which are conducted and edited from the writings of Mr Bellamy In the New Nation and Looking Q Backward < |
