Show At the Tabernacle Stake President Angus M Cannon presided as usual at the 2 oclock services ser-vices at the tabernacle yesterday and Apostles John Henry Smith and Heber J Grant and President Joseph F Smith delivered the sermons Apostle J H Smith who had just finished a trip through some of the outlying out-lying aistricio bam he had found the people to be spiritually and pecuniar thy improved They are performing their religious duties with renewed energy and show a desire to fill out then destiny as Saints of God An interest in-terest is also to be noted he continued in people not belonging to the church The good work of the home mission nines is also becoming apparent at home as many wayward ones have been brought in again to the true fold and are now engaged in active service The trouble has been that many of the Saints in seeking after their temporal weltare have forgotten that which is vastly more important the spiritual To those who have been negligent missionaries mis-sionaries should give special attention so that that first love may be warmed within them I is very easy for the Saints to become lukewarm and to lose that kindred interest in their brothers and sisters in the faith The greatest safeguard against this is activity in the gospel The strong should strengthen the weak Those who have the spirit and zeal of the truth should transfuse it among their brethren Apostle Grant opened by saying he felt instructed by the words of the lormer speaker as they had been dictated dic-tated by the spirit of truth Sometimes Some-times elders after attending these meetings criticise the remarks that God put into the mouths of his servants ser-vants This is because they have not the proper spirit Those who go into the houses of God and are not profited by the teachings of his servants will be under condemnation to a greater extent than those who have not had the privilege of hearing the truth Many who bear a testimony to the divinity of this work will not listen attentively rnlcqthnnrl at-tentively to the instructions of the nrlpthnni The fact is that many of the people have the disease of moneymaking which like the liquor habit seems to grow with alarming swiftness One man who was known to be increasing financially continued year after year to give the same tithing The cause of this was that the disease of money making was growing upon him Many of the wealthy leave vast sums of money to their families when they pass away Often this money is recklessly spent I and soon goes and the souls of the families go with I Men spend their lives in accumulating a vast bank account ac-count and of what use is it Only to buy tickets to hell for their families The Saints should keep all of Gods commandments and they will then be better citizens and better men President Joseph F Smith said a profitable subject for contemplation on an occasion of religious worship was the object of our being on this terrestrial terres-trial sphere Latterday Saints came into the world to do good We came into the world to build up Zion I was not specially for the accumulation of worldly goods although the Lord has promised temporal blessings to I his people There are many children I I in Israel and i is the duty of fathers to set them a worthy example The lIfe of the father is the pattern of the family that of the bishop the example for his ward The priesthood should therefore be careful of their conduct for as the leaders are so will be the flock ane Saints should not forget to appreciate ap-preciate and honor the priesthood they I bear I is perfect in all its functions and the lower and higher do not clash in any way Every faithful boy is entitled to receive a portion of the priesthood They begin as deacons and then can gradually go ahead as they show their worthiness The sons of Israel on whom the work will hereafter here-after devolve are the ones to be taught and encouraged Membership in the kingdom is a great boon to the people and Is vouchsafed to all who show their worthiness I should be I valued above all things for without it I I we cannot have the gifts of the gospel or see the kingdom of heaven Everyone I Every-one from the highest to the lowest in the priesthood must work to retain his standing in the church There can be no favoritism The fact that a I i man is an apostle does not justify him I in doing wrong Zion is the pure in heart I is the good deeds and righteousness of the people that have made Zion what she is with her glory of golden fields and her everlasting hills Lately there has been too much criticism about a certain class of elders who nave not the power of instructing in-structing the people in scholarly language lan-guage This should not go on Humility and earnestness are more pleasing in the sight of God than flowing flow-ing periods or brilliant metophors I is essential that we should know the truth when it is presented and then have the disposition and will to adhere to it Many of the Saints who are wise in the things of God allow themselves to follow in the way of perdition They should repent of these evils If they do not they should not be allowed to enter the temple of God for no frequenter of gambling dens or grog shops has any place in that ascred edifice A high councillor who enters a whisk shop merits severe condemnation because of the light he has received When the authorities know of men high in office dishonoring their priesthood in this way it is their duty to call him to account ac-count or they will be held responsible for neglecting to do so This rule should be undeviating it makes no difference who the transgressor is Zion will become pure when the people peo-ple become pure and not before The authorities will continue to guard the people from the pitfalls as it is their privilege to do The order of the priesthood must be preserved though the heavens fall |
